is your name on the lease? If so, then yes you are obligated to cover the rent. If your name is not on the lease, you are free to split. The cool thing to do would be to at least try to find a replacement roommate for the lame *** loser you are leaving.

Who's name is on the lease?

If it is both of you, then you will have to pay half, unless you can get him and the land lord to agree to take you off.

If it is his name only, then you are free.

If it is your name only, then you can be stuck for the whole amount. Better to get him to move out, unless you can get him and the land lord to agree to change it to his name.

Good luck.

If he's your boyfriend, by not helping him the rent you would be screwing him over. Don't do that!

Did you committ to a year? Then yes. Even if you did not sign the lease you are obligated. Remember, what goes around comes around. Don't stiff anyone for your rent.

Questions to be answered
1 did you co-sign the lease?, if so you can be held responsible for your portion in most States
2 are you a minor?, if not then you are held liable if you did co-sign, if you are no minor can legally enter to an agreement without parental agreement, so they are safe under the circumstance
3 are you married? if so you are responsible, etc.

warren_zevon_1
If you are a signatory on the lease, then you are liable for a portion of the lease, depending on your state's landlord/tenant laws. You could be liable for the full amount of the lease.

If you have not signed the lease, your only arrangement is with your ex-to-be.

As the others have stated, if your name is on the lease, you are as legally bound to that apartment as he is. If not, you can walk out anytime. Now, that's a pretty crappy thing to do to someone, but legally, he can't do a damn thing about it. I would continue to pay your own portion of the rent until he finds someone to live with him, it's only fair, and legally, it could be the only option you have.

You can call your landlord and see if you can transfer the entire payment to your boyfriend and take your name off the lease. I did this with my last roommate and it worked out fine. However, if this cannot be done then you will have to continue to pay until you/ your boyfriend finds a new roommate.

Please do not live with your boyfriend. You will be nothing but a shack up honey. Be true to yourself and keep your own apartment and keep your respect. If he wants you that bad he will marry you. No sex or living together until marriage.

Been happily married for 34 years.

Idont know about tenant laws where you are, but where I am, a land lord can choose to go after only one person on the lease. If your boyfriend made up his own lease and it is leagally sound then yes.
