caitlyn | Would a garden pond put you off buying a house? |
were putting our house on the market soon, we have two fish ponds in the back garden one is quite large 10ft x 6ft x 3ft deep and is home to ghost Koi,the other is a lot smaller and just has goldfish, do you think this will put prospective buyers off, if so what is the solution apart from filling them in |

You know, it depends on people. However, ponds are very popular right now, so it may be a turn on to people. If you have enough plants surrounding them, they will not have that much to do with them, unless you fed your Koi and goldfish something special, since the plants should be producing enough to feed them. I think people will ask how hard it is to take care of them, and just get telling them, the plants are the most important part. Again, right now, ponds are very very popular. So it could towards your favor.
Just so you know people who are saying the small kids thing...do you see TallPaul, bought the house anyway? And you can't tell me, if you really liked it, you couldn't put a nice rod iron fence or something around it. Does a swimming pool stop a family with kids from buying a home ? NO! Most of the time it is a turn on. So I would play it up as much as possible. Again, they are very popular right now. |

Perhaps it would put someone off, especially if they had kids. You could always cover them with a metal grid and you could still see the fish through them. |

No, but it might with people who have small children. |

Definitely wouldn't put me off - but I'm not a typical buyer - no kids.
Depends what your target audience is really I guess! |

it would be a downfall for me as i have 3 young children but if i was pleased with the rest of the house it wouldn't put me off id just fill it in.
depends really you might get a veiwer who will be pleased with it.
hope this helps goodluck. x |

You could offer to remove and fill the ponds for any buyers, at your cost. If I were going to buy it I would feel much better knowing that was a possibility. I have small children so I would not even consider a house with ponds, but I would if they offered to fill it if I wanted to. |

It will certainly put off buyers with small children because of the safety aspect.
We very nearly didn't buy this house because of the 12ft x 8ft x 3ft high (6ft deep) pond that is in the garden. Previous owner was a koi fanatic. We still have it (just with goldfish) until the wife figures out how she wants the garden. This means we'll probably have it forever *sigh* |

love this site!

Wow! What an asset!!! Play it up- not fill it up! I think that could be a major asset! How fun to have such a feature in your backyard! Maybe some people with small children wouldn't like it, but what about all the people that would?! I think describe it as a huge asset and raise the price of your home! :) |

it would me only because ive got 3 young children and also my friends grandson drowned last year in one.I wouldnt do anything to it just yet and when showing anyone around mention that it can be filled and you would be prepared to do it,after all some people do like ponds.good luck! |

If you're really worried about it, you can say in the descrpition that it is ideal for a small fish farm or Koi. People are always looking for morgage helpers and maybe farm tax rates, they save a great deal of money. hope this helps =) |

Those types of ponds are a personal thing. Some folks like fish and some don't. So consider what the majority would be looking for and give it to them. If that means taking them out and making it just yard, then I'd do it. And save face with your Realtor having to tell you that. |

Not at all, I think ponds should attract buyers. |

The house next door has just sold and there is a pond in the garden, you don't say if you are moving your fish, we moved and had to make a pond to rehouse our fish, make sure you let the people buying your place know what you will be doing with the fish, if you leave no fish they can restock or drain and fill in. Koi can be worth a bit, so take with you or sell before you leave. |
