Would it be too much to ask to skip a months rent, to pay the Gas bill?
I just got my gas bill for my rental house, and it was almost $500. ahhhh! So, needless to say, I can't pay it!

My house is always cold, and I turn the heat down at night, and during work days. So, I could understand if we were warm and keeping the heat turned up. But, I shouldn't be shivering at night and paying this much money for Gas. The house is really old, and not well insulated.

I love my landlords, and don't want to make them upset, but I simply cannot pay for this.

I'd be better off renting a more expensive house, and paying these kind of prices, than living in this place-cold.

Is it too much to ask for them to let me use my rent payment to pay for the gas bill?

Well, then I'll move to a more insulated house, and pay half of what I'm paying now. If they don't want to lose me as a renter, they'd better do something. Insulate, maybe.

depending upon where you live, there could be help you can get for your utilities. I would check that out right away. Call the utility company and let them know that you are going to need a little time to pay the bill.

Pay your landlord first. During the winter months most utility companies will work with you as long as your honest with them. Tell your landlord that you are going to have to find a cheaper place to live if they don't install an energy efficient heater. There is a solution, but it will require help from several sources.

It sounds like you have done all you can do. Pray, and start seeking.

You are asking them to pay your bills for you. Yes, this is too much to ask. You are a grown up, no one other then you is responsible to pay your bills.

I would tell you that the rent comes first. Put off the gas company. If you did that I'd start eviction.

Negotiate with the gas company not your Landlord. I live in an old, uninsulated house too, and the bills are crazy in the winter. Get those plastic kits at the home improvement center for your windows. They help a lot!

Yes, of course it would be too much! They expect their tenants to pay their regular rent on a regular basis -- monthly.

You might possibly get away with asking if you can pay only half the monthly rent when it's due, and the remaining half two weeks later. That's the most I would expect any reasonable landlord to allow -- and they have no obligation to accept that offer.

I'd think it more likely that the gas company would accept a late payment. Why not just make a partial payment to them and pay your rent in full?

Yes, it is too much to ask of your landlords. It's not your landlords' fault that this is an extremely cold winter, and it's not their fault that the price of gas has gone up considerably either.

Furthermore, your financial logic train has left the tracks. You want to move to a place where you pay more rent for TWELVE months of the year so you can pay less heating bills for a FEW months of the year ? Do the math, dear.

uh...do you think they can get a 1/12'th mortgage credit for your gas bill?

I can't see this.

Turn off the heat when you are not present. Turn off the heat when you are going to sleep. Ask the landlord to insulate the house. Talk to the utility company and see if they have a program to insulate the house or provide a new energy efficient furnace.

babygirl
the first mistake youre making is fluxuating the thermostat setting..every time you turn it down and then turn it back up the furnace uses more gas to heat the house up to that temperature..if you would keep it at one temperature you would save on the usage of gas..
you can ask your landlord about skipping the rent..they may agree to it but then they may not...
