Would this be legal to do this....?
My grandma lives in an apartment builing consisting of 8 houses, all of which are rented from the council. I am not rich, but if i ever won the lottery would it be legal to give money to all of the houses so that the residents can buy them with my money, because the residents will get a discount from the council if the houses are bought under the residents name, so i can rent them back to them at a cheaper price? I was thinking it may be a good idea if i ever did win the lottery, or came into money because the residents save money, i make money, i get to bring the building up to scratch if it is no longer council property and also i will get to hang onto my grandmas apartment, after she is gone, god forbid. I know i could easily buy her apartment anyway, but would it be legal to do the rest of what i said?

The only flaw is the part about giving them the money to buy and then charging them rent. If you give them the money the property belongs to them, not you.

You could possibly buy in your own name and then rent to them, but you can not force them to pay rent if the property is not in your name.

Learn to do maintainence. The council probably charges what they do to pay for plumbing, wiring repairs, painting and new floors. Roofs have to be repaired after years. It is expensive and needs to be saved for.

Charging less for rent may leave too little to maintain the building meaning it would become a slummy building over years.

You will do better to learn to save and invest than to buy lottery tickets.

TOASTEE
1) its not likely you will win the lottery
2) if you did, you can just buy the building and do whatever you like with it or find a new building and do it.

If you win the lottery, just buy the whole complex and do as you will. Or build your own and give them the decision to move in there if they desire.

i don't know if it would be legal
but it would be nice

You would have to buy the complex... because there is no such thing as an apartment with 8 houses... but 8 apartments yes... unless you are talking about rowhousing... or something like that or a housing complex. anyway... you could buy the property and the houses or apartments and set the rates as the landlord because you own the property... but I am pretty sure that you wouldn't be able to lower the rates too much as it is very expensive to keep the buildings up to code and add in maintainence and repairs... trust me it adds up.

I am involved in the ownership of an 8 lot apartment complex and although it is making money, it costs about half as much as it is making, and then add in the mortgage... I am making scratch for 8 more years, but then I will be making more as we will own the property.

good luck.

Yes- that would be illegal, because if you give them the money to buy in their name then you CANNOT legally charge them rent. You can ONLY charge rent for places YOU own.

For that plan to work then you would need to buy the entire complex in your name.

Yes. You could get away with it. You can gift anyone you want any amount of money anytime. The more urgent problem you have though is the apparent lose of you faculties. Come back to reality.

It sounds possible yet sketchy. I'd say first purchase the building from council. Then secure purchase price for the tenants in the form of individual mortgages. Then do what is called a reverse mortgage You'd basically be buying their debt at a profit to them. They get a small check from you to prove the purchase, they get to live there for free for the rest of their days and oficially you own the whole lot.

yes, but it will be easy for someone to scam you and take control over your project, so it is not a good idea, but it is legal

Dinkie
i think it would be legal
