Tulip | Would you buy a beautiful big, cheap house knowing that the drive to work is about 1.5hrs? |
My bf and I went house hunting over the weekend. We checked out a couple of model homes and he really likes this one house inparticular. It's about 2700sf,4 bedrooms (5 optional), and its about $389,000. He is a Navy Vet so his VA will greatly help a lot. I really like the house as well, but the commute to work is at least 1.5hrs.
Just wanted to know how many of you would make this sacrifice? I would like to hear your explanations.....thanks! Additional Details If you're familiar with CA: My bf works in Torrance and I work two jobs in the Long Beach area. The house we were looking at is in Norco.
He wants to get a house closer to that area such as Corona, Rancho Cucamonga, Ontario since the houses there are really big houses yet have smaller price tags... |

I definitely wouldn't. There are other houses, I'm sure if you keep looking you can find something great that is closer to work. Don't take the first thing that makes you smile, especially if it has that kind of a 'but' attached to it. That would be 3 hours of driving a day... not good! Think about gas prices! By the time you pay for all that gas you could have been able to afford to pay a little more for a closer house!
I guess if you'd be carpooling, you wouldn't lose all that time together, so that's one thing to consider. But especially if you wouldn't be, don't do it! |

I guess it really depends on two factors, how much you like the house and how much your partner likes driving. I've had that commute and longer ones never regretting my house choice, whenever I was stuck in traffic, I would think about my house in gratitude which made it all worthwhile. |

Me personally? I wouldn't do it. I bet you can find a really great house closer, but then again, maybe this is the house for you. Only you know that. I know plenty of people who DO make the drive, and choose to do so for a newer home. It just happens that over here most of the newer houses ARE that far away from downtown dallas, where most people work. They are in nice areas, but you have to be willing to battle traffic. Realize that when traffic strikes back that time can be almost doubled! The fact that your asking tells me that it is weighing heavy on your mind. Look at some other houses in different neighborhoods and really think about what you want in a house and where you can find it. If you just started looking, I would be more hesitant. We are about to close on a house and if we had gone after the first one we fell in love with... well lets just say we have found many better houses since then. The longer you look, the more you realize what is out there, what you want, what you can't live without, and how to find it! |

there is no way I would do this. Have you thought how much money you would spend on gas |

I wouldn’t even have looked at a house that far out.
Ten years ago, when gas was rarely $1.00/gallon and that didn’t look to be changing soon, I would have said “Buy it!” I used to know plenty of people who commuted this much every day. With gas at $3-4/gallon (and rising), I’m not enjoying the fact that I need gas every 7-9 days to commute 50 miles a day. Since your commute is probably 3x mine, you’d be filling up a lot more often. Ignoring price, I’d feel guilty about the extra environmental impact of a commute that’s unnecessarily long.
Beyond that, though, there’s a lot to consider.
Do you or are you planning to have kids? If so, are you ok with them potentially being an hour and half away from you in an emergency situation?
Do you mind losing three hours of your day to driving? I only lose about 60-70 min a day commuting and that’s too much for me.
How does your buyer’s agent feel about resale potential? If it’s that far from employment, is the house going to be hard to sell?
How close are shopping and services? If you need to run to the store on the weekend, is it around the corner or do you have to drive a bunch more to get there? |

No way. The cost of gas. Think about it 3 hours of your life gone. Because you had to sit in your car (and thats on a good day). Most people just want to get home after work not fight their way home. Thats 3 hours you could spend reading, working out, making love, or sleeping. |

Depends on your job and is it flexible and if your work is in a industrial area. Most likely I would not buy a house that far away unless I just really hated living near where my work was. Many times when you factor in gas and tolls you could have just spent more and lived closer to work for less money. You also should factor in you time. after all time is money and by driving that much you will spend over 32 days on the road a year. |

Only if I liked driving alot!!
-actually if I make enough money and work a long enough day to make the cost of driving (GAS,.WEAR N TEAR on the car, etc) worth it
-Don't care if I am not able to spend time in this beautiful home I have fallen in love with
-or am willing to give up the job for the house...
That is my honest opinion of the situation. Weigh out your options and make a decision that you can live with. Good Luck!

No. It is simply not worth it. The cost of gas will eat a hole into your budget to the point it becomes your dominate bill.
I lived 10 miles out in the country for a long time.Doesn't seem like much but the gas prices kept rising and finally most of my pay check was going for gas.
Keep looking there will not doubt be a home closer to work that you will like.
I would rather sacrifice on some bedrooms than give all my money to the gas station. |
