STEVE0 THE CLOWN | Would you buy a fixer upper for a first home? |
|

Yes, if you know howto do the "fixer uppering" yourself. My brother bought a house like that and fixed it up himself and it turned out really nice. He lived in it for a couple of years and then sold it for a great profit and then found and even nicer home to live in. He was really patient in finding a good deal and then worked hard and it all worked out for him in the end. |

I did. IT had suffered a divorce, and the macho man busted out a bunch of windows, and knocked down every door inside, and there was dog and cat feces throughout.
Apart from that, it still had most of the 1971 decorating and furnace, and windows.
It was a LOT of work. Now that its done, I can't believe how beautiful it looks, and the damage was relatively minor, stuff that could be easily fixed by me.
I would definetly do it again, I did most of the work, and clean up, and it has been frustrating at times, but overall I think it was worth it. |

I did, actually.
I don't recommend it if you aren't able to do a lot of the work yourself, though. It also depends on the criticality of the work to be done.
For instance, I had to hire someone right away (before I could even move in) to update the plumbing and electrical. Then I moved in and I've slowly updated (almost) everything else since.
After nearly four years of this, though, I simply can't face the last step, which is renovating the bath. I know the house is going to be a disaster (because I can't do the major work and the contractors always destroy everything in their path) and I'm going to have to stay with a friend while they're doing the work.
Just be sure you know what you're getting yourself into before you sign on the dotted line! |

you have to keep in mind, what the outcome will be for you.
if you buy a home for 25,000 and it costs 25,000 to fix it up, and it's in a neighborhood that is only going to sell for 40,000, it doesn't make much sense, does it? do some checking about the area it's in. the idea is to come out ahead. |

Yes I would. A first time home buyer usually does not have much collateral to put into a house. A fixer upper home is usually cheaper because there are a lot of things that you will need to fix. But you will be proud of it when it's all done. It will be hard but you will be fine. Just don't have too much expectations. If you have lots of money then you should get a brand new house. If not then a fixer upper house is good for a first time home buyer. But do not expect to fix everything in a short period of time if your money is tight. And do not get in debt just to fix the house either. Use whatever left over money that you have to fix the house little by little. You will have to space out the fixing. The first home is usually not the dream house for common people like us. Just make sure that the house is in a good neighborhood area. Good luck! |

I did in my younger days. It was a lot of work, but we got that old building looking good. We actually had a business in the first floor of the building- a convenience store. We lived in an upstairs apartment, and there was another apartment upstairs that was rented out. My first husband and I separated and divorced, and he declared bankruptcy to get out of paying my settlement, so I didn't see anything for all of my hard work.
But at this point in my life, I am in the house that I will be in for the rest of my life. It's an older home, and we have done a lot of work on this one, too.
Fortunes have been made buying fixer-uppers and renovating them. Depends on what is wrong with the house- if it's just paint and TLC and cleaning or is there are serious issues with the property. As a Realtor, I know that the competent home inspector is the buyer's best friend. |

I did, and if you are handy (or interested in learning) you should too. In 2002, my husband and I could only afford a fixer-upper in CA. It was horrible on the inside & out, and smelled like dog. We gutted the kitchen, installed new cabinets, flooring, appliances, recessed lights, etc. We spent our tax returns on home improvement for 4 yrs, and it cost about $50k over that time. In the end, with the appreciation, we sold it and made $285k. So I'd say, Go For It. |

probably so i could live there and fix it up |
|

 |
it depends
-how bad
-how much would it cost to fix up
-what location
-do you have children/elderly?
-what climate? you might get constant molding in humid/rainy areas
-property value - will it go up or down?
for me, if it was in a good area where it is almost guaranteed to go up in value for its mere location for a relatively low cost compared to surrounding homes, i would say yes. |
