mixedmegababe | Would you move California to Oregon and start new? |
I've lived in California my whole life and im just ready for a move, i'm sick of it here, its just to expensive for us. My work has laid us all of and 2/28/2007 is our last day. There moving to Hillsboro, Oregon and offered us jobs if we're willing to relocate, at no cost to them thu so we'll have to pay for our move. I've looked at apartments, houses and townhouses and its so nice and cheap up there. For a 3 bedroom nice new townhouse it was only $1100. Thats how much I pay now for a small 1 bedroom apartment. Would u take the move. I'm so nervous. I wanna do it but just not alone. I live with my BF of 5 years and he's willing to do it. But he would rather 1 of us {me} go up there and try it out 1st, then he'll come up. He would move back into his parents house for a few months not pay rent and send me money. I just dont know. I wanna do it but i'm so scared. How can i push myself to do it. Additional Details It was my idea to have my BF stay down here. Were both in our late 20's but i suggested he stay just incase something were to happen as in get fired or quit or anything. Then he could stay down here and send me money for a few months then come up in 3-6 months. |

First of all, is this job worth moving for? Do you have potential to grow in the company? If you will make enough money from this job, why will your boyfriend have to send you money to live in Oregon?
Oregon is a great state, very pretty and everything, but it will be a lot colder than California. How do you like the cold weather?
Heck, if your boyfriend doesnt not have a job in Cali, he should move up with you. I have a couple of friends that just moved down to Oregon from Washington State for jobs. They really like it down there.
If you are tired of California, and want to try something new. Go for it! No regrets! |

It is often difficult and exhilirating to try something new. I have found it is very easy to move to another place if you cultivate a sort of curious journey and sense of adventure.. with this regardless of what happens you will be creating carpe diem (Seizing the moment).
Explore your fears.. Sort them into irrationally based in history or fear.. versus rational and good to contingency plan. ANYTHING worth doing will be accompanied by some fear, but equal or greater payoff in the end.
Live your dreams! Wishing you find happiness whereever you go, or don't go.. Happiness is indeed a decision not based in location. :D |

I can personally vouch for Hillsboro..its a nice community right out of portland.I lived there and also Beaverton and Portland.I loved it and moved there orginally from Memphis Tn..so what a change.Oregon has so much to offer people and its an awesome place to live.I lived there many years and met my wife that was living in New Orleans and we moved to Colorado..but I can tell you ..you will never be sorry. |

i think it depends on how much u like your job. is your job the best job imaginable? do you have skills employers find valuable? i live in southern california and it is expensive here but there are also so many opportunities. consider what u will miss here and what u will gain by moving. might sound corny but do a Pro vs. Con list and maybe go with your instinct. you must be leaning one way, even if its by a fraction. |

I live in Oregon. Hillsboro is a suburb of Portland, and there is plenty to do in Portland. It does rain a lot on this side of the state which is something you may have to get used to. I personally love the rain and Oregonions have adapted to it. You can see it in their architecture, food, and everything. It's an essential part of the culture that makes a pacific northwest city a very cool place. To a comment made earlier, not everyone smokes up here. In fact there is a law passed that makes it illegal to smoke in all public places INCLUDING restaurants (I think the only exception are bars and bowling alleys). |

i guess you should look at the other things in life that you do other than work. if you love living in a big city for all its glitter, parties, art museums, music festivals, department stores, and so on, you may not be happy in hillsboro, OR--unless it is easy to get to a big town. can you fly up there for 4 days to check it out?
you should also find out whether your boyfriend will be able to find a job when he comes up to OR. what kind of job? what does he do? is his industry up there at all?
oregon is really a beautiful state that many, many californians have moved to. they sold their expensive houses and bought better houses in prettier places in oregon. you are a touch at the tail end, i must say, though. the people that made the move starting about 10 years ago or more are those that maximized their house profits best.
however, i know nothing about hillsboro. you COULD write to its chamber of commerce or look it up on the internet to look at its demographics, cost of living, salaries as opposed to that, etc. i think you both could do a little research before you up and run.
but most of all, i really think you should look at what you do enjoy in the town you now live in. see if hillsboro and its environs will give you the happiness you seek.
one other thing for people that think of moving far away: never think that your move will help you eliminate your problems. no matter where you go, you never escape yourself. |

You should check it out. It has it's nice points, but remmber, it is cheap for a reason.
Personally I would find the constant cloudy skies and daily rain to be pretty depressing. Also, a LOT of people smoke up there. In public! Unless you like hiking in the rain activities are pretty limited. |

Hello,
I made the move 3 years ago to Oregon from the Bay Area... There's a little culture shock moving up here, I don't to lie to you...
It's very laid back and little of the conservative side. Other that that, the air is clear, people are nice and it's beautiful..... Housing is THE only thing that's cheap..... Hillsboro is very boring, but Portland is fun! |

It's gonna be a lot of adjustments to make. Are you ready for it? Think about it many times before making a decision. It should be two of you who will try it if ever you decided to move in Oregon. It's better to have somebody to accompany you. |

I too live in California and I agree that it is very expensive to live here. And I thought about moving else where to start a new life but I don't think I can ever move to Oregon. The last time I was in Oregon was almost 10 years ago and from what I can remember, in my opinion, there is no culture there. I would have to live in a very diverse community. |
