Would you pay more in rent to live closer to work if the commute is very expensive in gas?
Im trying to figure out if it is worth getting a more expensive apartment that is closer to my work if I use the money I would normally spend on gas for the extra rent. Is there logic in this?

Yes, because time is also worth money. Clean air is worth money. Less miles on your car is worth money. Being close enough to work to be counted on in a pinch is worth money...

No, pay less for rent and take the bus to work.

absolutely. i have always been a fan of living close to where i worked. less time traveling means more time at home. not to mention the cost of gas these days and that's not getting any better

ThatGuy!
I live about a 7 or 8 minute drive/bus ride.....that's as far as I could ever live from work.

It's unimaginable that people drive for 2+ hours/day.

Causing an awful suburban wasteland.

remember it is not just the gas...but i am assuming you have "Traffic"....in California we have Traffic!...so it would be so worth it to be closer and not have to deal with the extra gas, the traffice headaches, morons on the road etc etc

good luck :)

Living close to work has alot of advantages. Its too bad I can't. The neighborhood where I work is too rough and gang infested

Do the math. I have a half hour commute. I figured it out to roughly $5 round trip. $5 X 5 days a week X 4 weeks a month = $100. Figure out how much it costs you to get to work and see if the savings in money and hasle is worth it.

Yes there is logic. If you are spending the cash anyway at least you are saving time in your commute, which means more free time throughout the week.

Dont pay rent for anything. Get a condo for the same cost of rent and invest. When you go to sell that condo or town house you would of made a profit. Not just gave money to a land lord.

Well, if you are not a job hopper, then it is advisable to move closer to work place. I have done the same recently :).

And it is benefiting me in time and money both. I can work as freelancer in my extra time and earn extra. I can just relax or chill out, I can do some socializing and public relationship in my extra free hours.

All the benefits, nothing to loose.
