Skytide | Would you prefer to have roommate(s) or your own 1 bedroom (or studio) place? |
Just curious what people's preferences are and also WHY that is your preference. Pros and cons? Personal experiences? |

Roommates are a PIA. Best to try it alone. If you are ok living Spartan style, go for a studio so you can save more $$$. If you like having more space, 1 bedroom is totally worth it.
NEVER EVER EVER room with a relative. They are always the first ones to rip you off.
If you have a close friend of the same sex who you trust and could get along with all the time, then maybe it would be ok for you, but keep in mind that you give up a lot when you take on a roommate.
-you give up your right to walk through the house naked
-you have to keep them in mind when you bring home your GF/BF for a night of loud passion, or if they are the bringers of passion, you are in for a sleepless night...
-you have to deal with splitting the bills in a "fair" manner but often times it is really not all that fair
-you have to share everything in the house with them
-you have to deal with their idiosyncracies (and many times, IDIOT-syncracies)....
-make sure that they are on the lease or they will be able to royally screw you by simply leaving
-check their credit history before accepting them as a roommate
I once did a stupid thing and took my cousin in as a roommate. Within one month, he proceeded to move his girlfriend into the apt, short me on at least three major bills, run up the electricity bill doing who knows what, kept me up countless nights with her obnoxious moaning, partied and ate up all my food that I had bought for my use, and he destroyed the second bathroom. Oh and after 3 months, he lost his job and quit paying rent. After 4 months I tried to get him out, but he refused to leave. After 5 months I had to shut the power off to get him out. At 6 months I was facing an eviction notice because I could no longer afford to pay the rent by myself; I had completely drained all of my savings just trying to keep the place. But because he was also on the lease, half the expenses of the early termination of our lease were on him, and I got out without an eviction on my record because I was willing to work with the landlord for a solution.
So all in all - don't do the roommate thing. It's not worth it! |

I prefer my own place. I have a room mate now , and she gets cranky sometimes. I don't like feeling like I have to walk on egg shells around another person. |

A 1 bedroom studio..any day of the week....in college I had roommates...not good....go with a studio than if you want someone to stay over fine....if you want them to leave..than they have to ...... having roommates can be a nightmare....the old saying "you never really know a person until your live with them"..is so true...... |

definitely by myself
roommates hardly work out and if you like your friend don't move in with them
Ive had a couple of bad experiences but all in all i have lived by myself for a long time and i too love to walk around naked if i feel like it |

I prefer living alone. I have had money problems with roommates and also roommates with mental health issues which were not conducive to my own mental health needs. In addition, I like to have my space and I love being able to go from bedroom to bathroom in the nude. |

Of course I prefer to have my own bedroom no matter how small it is than a big shared bedroom. Everybody has their own needs and sometimes my needs can bother my roommate, vice versa. |
|

Don't blame me, I voted McCa

I live alone in a 1 bedroom and I LOVE IT. I value peace and privacy. I know if I have a bad day I can come home and relax. No one is going to bother me. But obviously I pay more rent than I would if I had a roommate, but to me, it's definately worth it. |

I grew up in a very structural environment with lots of discipline. My parent's not once allowed for my brothers and sisters to never stay at any-ones house or borrow anyone else belongings. They would tell us to never wear thrift store clothing, that is just dirty. Our parents never did think we or they were better than anyone else. It was just that they didn't want for us to never depend on anyone or grow up with bad habits...I wear thrift store things now, but back then there was a reason to why they told us that, because we should learn to respect other peoples belongings and because of the fact there are skin diseases out there, so many things you can catch from other peoples clothing, scabies, ringworm, viruses...
I for once at the age of 12 had my own room, and didn't like my friends to place any body part on my bed or touch my belongings, the feet on the bed I just cant stand or furniture such a bad dirty habbit with shoes on, for one they will never take care of my things the way I do. When I was a teen I loaned out a pair of OP shorts to one of my friends, and she returned them back with body fluids, I told her to just go ahead and keep them, and another friend whom her parents used to think their daughter was to good to hang out with me borrowed a pair of name brand jeans and left them smelling like someone died in them, that girl today is a drug addict, this is why people should never talk bad about anyones kids, disgusting told her to keep them, but I would never borrow from anyone, just was not my thing to do. And if I would have not been tough right I would have not learned to appreciate the value of my things, bought with love, and given to me for being responsible. In other words I earned my things, and took care of them. Lesson to listen to your parents they know best...
Now ten reasons why not live with friends or boyfriend...
1. For privacy reasons.
2. Jealousy kicks in.
3. Friend might not be a thief, but may have one friend whom is a thief.
4. Boyfriend issues and if married husband issues, cant trust anyone.
5. Friends are for a season and if lifetime friends, keep the distance to keep that friendship growing.
6. Rent or bill problems, who will pay what and or how.
7. Financial issues who might get laid off or loose a job, or become irresponsible.
8. Cleaning responsibilities, would not want to deal with someone else luggage.
9. People change, and problems start kicking in.
10. One has to call it quits and move on.
Why I live on my own and do for myself, it is called being very independent. Don't have to answer to anyone, and no one knows my affairs or business, and have all the privacy in the world, in my living room, kitchen, my food is kept clean, my restroom will feel safe and clean, my personal belongings are untouchable, no drugs in the unit, no funky or funny stuff going on.
I come and go as a please, and don't have to find strangers in my home, or my friends husband or boyfriend trying to make my friend jealous... |
