Would you rather have a big house in a shady neighborhood or a small house in a decent neighborhood?
We're newly married & poor trying to buy a house in an overinflated market. There are some places in our price range that are decent size (one's a 4 bedroom) but they are in a scarrier part of town. There are some in our price range in nicer parts of town, but they are a lot smaller. So my question is: would you rather get a great buy in a bad neighborhood or pay more for less house in a good neighborhood?

Mr realistic...believer in truth
Always, always,always.......LOCATION, LOCATION,LOCATION!!!

A 100% no-brainer....small HOUSE.

Well, I've leased a great house in a shady neighborhood and it was a mistake. The schools were substandard. The hellion kids taught my son to fight to protect himself and the family abuse of kids in the neighborhood caused me to actually feed some kids while the parents were out drinking. I exposed my kids to far to much. My staight A daughter was throwing her homework inthe trash because her friend did that, and this gf peed the bed. Lord, don't do it----PLEASE!

I would prefer a safer neighborhood over a bigger house. You can't put a price on security. I always want to feel safe when at home.

I would rather pay more for less house in a good neighborhood. If you are newly married, think ahead a few years...are you planning to have children? Which neighborhood would you rather have your children wandering around in!?

trinisugar
I'd take less of a house in a nicer neighbourhood, you can't put a price on safety and peace of mind. You do have renewal of some scary neighbourhoods though, so I'd look at the trends and see if I would be buying a home in a community that will improve in the near future. Still I'll always opt for the nicer neighbourhood.

We lived in a shady neighborhood for a year and a half. Cops at the neighbor's every other night, loud random parties, people and kids yelling at all hours of the day, mean dogs running loose(the dogs even killed our puppies), unkept houses/yards, and having to pay for a really good security system. Our neighbors had horses and you could see their bones. They would jump the fence to eat our grass. You never know if something's going to happen to your house or vehicle.

small house in a nice neighberhood, always. I've lived on both side of this question and I'd rather have a smaller place that I can still feel comfortable walking outside of.

Small house, good neighborhood, a much better place to raise children

lol wut
good neighborhood, hands down. Can't afford to sacrifice safety for a bigger house!

I would seriously consider the smaller home in the better neighborhood.

Larger homes are more expensive to heat and maintain considering you are married and poor. The intangables of a better neighborhood are harder to put a price tag on. Things like safety, better schooling for you children, the people your children will grow up around are extremely valuable.

And to be quite honest... learning to live in your means is something all American's need to learn. We really don't need the biggest and fanciest everything. We need to learn to be responsible with our money. The housing market is declining and will continue to decline for a while. It's a much better time to buy then it was 3-5 years ago. My advise is to make smart and responsible decisions with your finances, especially with something a huge and life changing as your home.

I love small houses so I'd go for the smaller house no matter what the neighborhood, lol.

Less heating costs, less work keeping it clean, less money spent on paint when it's time to re-model, less furniture & junk you'll find yourself buying to fill all the available corner space ;-)

Small house + Good neighborhood definitely. Why get a gorgeous house when you know your neighbors will make you very unhappy about the safety of you and your home?

The main thing about a first house is that you want something that will increase in value. In a shady neighborhood your house will most likely not raise in value much if anything due to vandalizim etc...it will decrease. The poor mans house in a rich neighborhood is a good find.

Lady Sardonyx
better neighborhood=better resale(when you can move)
