Would you sacrifice a long drive for a beautiful house?
I just wanted to know how many of you would drive lets say an hour and half to work knowing that you have this big, beautiful house to come home to everyday?

My bf and I have been talking about this certain model home that we saw over the weekend. Its about 3,000sf with a price tag of about $400,000, but it's an hour an half, give or take, away from where we work. We've seen other model homes with even cheaper price tags and smaller square footage, but are still huge.

Please let me know what you would do? I'm sure there will be a lot of you who will say no-way due to gas prices.

Hell yeah, I'd rather have an amazing house that i love and drive even up to 3hrs to work than an average house that was a 10mins walk from work.

My husband and I had a similar situation. We found our dream house but it would mean a 45 min commute for me (although only 5 for him). We bought the house and couldn't be happier about it. I don't mind my commute b/c I am happy with the house and neighborhood, so it makes it worth it. Your situation is clearly different though in that your commute is double mine and your bf will also have a long commute. Part of what made it easier to justify for us was that it would be so close for my husband. In your situation though, I would probably go for a smaller house that is closer, since it would be far for both of you...also 3000 sq ft is way more space than 2 people need!

yes i would buy it.. let me explain why.. my first house was in claytin new jersey.. a housing development.. then after i fixed the house the way i wanted a lot of undesirable people moved in to the development.. and i got so bad i had to move... then i moved to williamstown. next to a house both were sample homes.. the neighbor made life miserable for me then the person moved and a man bought the house and made it a day care center seventy five people... after that first experience. i bought a lot years ago three acres.. i was alone for twenty five years then someone bought the lot next to mine.. and trouble with three different owners... now getting back to you.. consider this.. no neighbors.. you will have to put up with.. to have peace .. you have to drive a lot but you will find that it is worth the trouble.. happiness costs.. and it is worth the extra expence. ok gilermo.

It's a long drive but it would be worth it in the end.

No I couldn't handle the traffic for that long! Not to mention the gas! It not just the cost, it's that we ALL have to cut back on using it!!! I'd rather have those three hours to be IN my home enjoying it!!!

man i would.... i do it anyway... the only difference is that i am going to school!! and school starts at 8:00... i have to drive far to school!!

Big mistake.

Peak Oil will get you.

Gasoline today is 3.30 per gallon.

I think it could go as high as 4.00 by the summer.

Next year I'm looking at $5.00

People in London are paying $9.00 per gallon, they buy it by the Litre there.

We were in a similar situatio here in San DIego. My husband and I found a beautiful home in Campo for $300,000 but it was an hour and a half from his work. The deal buster for us was that the closest grocery store was 45 minutes away as well as the closest hospital. We have kids and the thought of driving 45 minutes in an emergency was frightning. You have to factor your taxes, mortgage, cost of living and you gas for that commute. The first few weeks, maybe even months may be fine because you are excited about your new house. But once the newness wears off, the drive will really wear on you. Also, what is there around you? Are there stores, things to do, theatres and such? If not it's be a drive just for you to go clothing shopping or to hang out with people....just some food for thought.

depends on whether you want to deal with commute times and gas prices - if you buy it then decide next year you can't handle it - will you be able to sell it for what you have into it?

200 miles/day will eat up a car in no time , plus 6 hours on the road...you are nuts!

student
Yeah I guess I would..Just know that it's a drive like that EVERY SINGLE DAY lol...You'll be fine : )

Good Luck and Best Wishes!!
