--**how much rent should i pay my parents-**?
im 17 nearly 18 at the end of august and starting full time work at the start of september, i will get £180 a week after tax and my parents want £80 of that, with that 100 most will go on driving lessons and the train fare which is £60 a month, plus any luxeries.

is this the right amount of rent to be paying at the start of your first full time job or is it not right?

thank you for your answers!

With apologies to them, i think that you have pretty greedy parents!

However, as just renting a 'room' in someone elses' house would cost 60 quid or more it is not actually as over the top as it seems. My 26 year old recently moved back home (temporarily we all hope) after he and his partner split, i charge him 40 quid a week which includes grub and washing. Basically i want him to pay his way but at the same time i do not want to make a profit out of him. I would not charge him 80 pounds a week whatever he was earning.

To one or 2 others, the asker DID say per week, not month. And for the USA guys, that is around $160 a week.

£80 a week is alot too much as u could be paying for your own home with that!
£80 a month is reasonable x

They want 80 per week or month?
If its week then thats really harsh!
I paid 25 a week! tell them you cannot afford it!

I would look in local paper to see what the average rent board is where you live. this will give you a good place to start negation's, If you help out around the house and yard you could ask for a lower rent.

£80 a week does seem quite high (although with rising prices of living expenses that may be how much its costing them to keep u)

have u said to ur parents that the money u will spend is going on proper things ie.driving lessons, and that ur not wasting the money.

The correct way to work it out is for your parents to total all the bills, such as gas, mortgage/rent, electricity etc., and divide the total by the number of people living in the house. The resulting sum is the amount you should pay. You will still have quite a bit left for yourself each week. It'll teach you how to budget so you learn the value of money. Children who don't help around the house and expect their parents to keep them for nothing too are entirely selfish.

In the real world, the general rule of thumb is that your rent should be about 30 percent of your take-home pay. Your parents, on the other hand, are also providing you with heat, electric, television, and internet, and probably meals as well. All things considered, 80/week is a reasonable price to pay for everything you're getting from them.

To those who are saying his parents are too harsh -- keep in mind that he is working FULL TIME now. He is not in school with a part-time job. He is an adult and as such should be expected to live up to adult responsibilities and obligations.

(We also don't know how his parents feel about having him still living at home. Maybe they're trying to encourage him to fly the nest and be out on his own!)

Wow. Well, they must need the money. If you don't like it then find a roommate. It is kinda harsh but maybe they just want to teach you responsibility. It will make you stronger in the end.
If you don't think you can make it on paying them that much then let them know and see if they can give you a break for the first six months.

just move out for that price, unless you actually like your parents and they cook and clean for you, but u find that hard to believe,

crazykoolhelper
That's about rite. I mean your parents need all the help they can get.
They have been providing for you for a pretty long time. maybe you should give more, but thats just me.

That's about right, sorry to burst your bubble but you couldn't move out and pay £80 a week for everything that your parents include. You'd be looking at £80 a week not including food and washing if you rented a room, or £80 a week would get you a small 1 bed flat without bills/council tax, food and other expenses. Count yourself lucky!!!

only_mija
Check around your area what the going rate is for a rental room. Then decide if it is fair. Chances are that the going rate for a rental room is probably alot more than what your parents are asking you for the rent. Plus they are probably not going to charge you for food, phone use, doing ur laundry and not mention car insurance. So think about it???

I think £60 a week including food would be a nice gesture until you have passed your driving test after all it is essential and then you could negotiate

It is kinda steep. But then, I think they are right in doing this.
In the real world, as in on your own. . . it can cost more, all bills Inclusive, I'd have to say you have a good deal.
I left Home very early mind, so I never really had to pay anything. No joke either, I left at 16.
But that was soooo long ago.
It sounds to me that Rent Averages 100 a week where you are. If so, enjoy it while it lasts eh?

We are only hearing one side of the story, everybody has different needs. When my kids started work I gave them 3 months "free", I then worked out between us an amount. If you were my child, I would be looking at taking £30-40pw. When your salary increases then so would your rent.
I think you should speak to your parents and try to compromise.
Good luck with your new job.

I'm sorry but i think you have got horrible parents, how dare them ask you for all that money,my blood is boiling that parents can ask their child to do this, they brought you to this world and i'm dam sure they can take care of you, Yes i do believe in teaching you to save money, have a savings account and deposit money weekly in it, that's what my children had to do then i was happy. but i never took a penny off my children. How dare your parents

haha i pay no rent :P

How much should I charge my 28 yr old Daughter to live with me ?. I am Divorced from her mother, I had to sell the big family home, I am retired and on a Pension. She split up from her partner and moved back with me. I take her and bring her to work everyday in the car 30 miles ?

Jay
I am replying to this as a 30-something adult who's back at home on a long-term basis (it really is not uncommon in the UK now, due to the current climate/ relationship breakdowns etc). I think the £80 figure is a reasonable amount for someone like myself to pay, even though actually I only take home about £200 a week for 20 hours work. In fact, I pay a bit more than that, even out of my meagre wages, although I made the offer because I really do want to pay my way. When I was younger, I paid my parents nothing or thought £25 was enough etc, but frankly, if you're getting all your food, toiletries, washing, a bedroom, all the electricity to run your laptop/ plasma/ consoles, not to mention being kept warm by their central heating etc, £80 is fair. Personally, I could never eat as well as I do now, and get all that for under £120 a week if I was on my own. And even then I would be in some skanky bedsit or room share, and eating 30p noodles/ tomato soup for dinner, with no money to run the central heating. That said, someone of my age "should" be out on their own, whereas it's different when you're young and just starting-out with work, when parents will often accept that £25/ £30 a week. But I don't blame parents for wanting more, especially if they have a mortgage to pay. The people posting above who were disgusted by the concept of parents charging their kids rent are either i. very young and not yet experienced in how the world works, or ii. incredibly selfish. Don't take offence though, as I was in the latter camp for many years, but if you take a look at the outrageous gas/ electricity/ rates/ water rates/ sewage bills/ food bills and TV licence costs involved in running a 3/4 bed house in early 2011, you will soon see that parents aren't 'on the make' in asking for £80. I think this thread was initiated in 2009, but things haven't exactly gotten any easier since then, have they? To conclude, to the o/p or anyone in the same situation, try and negotiate with them down to £50 or £60 until such time as you are earning a bit more money, then gradually work up to paying the £80. PS. How far do you take the thirds rule...? What if you are an adult earning £1000 a month? My 22-year-old niece takes that amount home (more than me!) and pays absolutely nothing in rent because her Dad doesn't want to ask. She is undoubtedly i. tight and ii. selfish, given that her Mum left the family unit a year ago and her Dad gives her lifts to work each day. My 20-year-old Nephew also pays nothing but earns £200 a week... and his Dad is a struggling single parent. Please don't be that person.
