♥♥♥i will always love you♥♥♥ | is $2,400 a month good enough to live comfortably in an apartment? |
FIRST LIVING CONDITIONS:
apartment would be $800 dollars 2 bed room apartment
Three people living there- wife husband and new born
wife and husband have their own jobs that bring $2,400 a month of income total.
Enough to live simply but comfortably?
SECOND LIVING CONDITIONS:
Same thing but with no baby/child. |

Is that including utilities? Do you have free babysitting or are you paying for daycare? I don't know that it would be worth it for both parents to work and pay for daycare if you're making such low wages.
It depends on the cost of living in your area. In some places you would not get by on that. In others, you'd be fine.
Why are there 2 scenarios? Thinking of selling the baby? |

your rent shouldn't exceed 1/4 of your net income. if you can get a place around 600 total, do that. |

you are the only one that knows all your monthly/qtrly/annual expenses - write them down on paper and compare to teh $2400 (if that is the take home pay)
rent
utilities
cable TV
internet
food & household items (baby costs as much per week with formula, baby food and diapers) as an adult does)
car payment
gas
car insurance
doctor bills, prescriptions - parents and baby
entertainment, eating out
emergency savings
regular savings (house down payment, next car down payment
retirement savings
child educational savings
if Mom is going to work after baby born, then you have child care expenses and less income when she is out on maternity leave - better save as much as possible to make up for that lost income ahead of time |

Bostonian In MO

In Carthage or Neosho, MO, it would be plenty. In San Francisco, you'd be well below the local poverty level.
$800 a month on a $2,400 income is on the high side but might be OK if you have no outstanding debt. That said, with a newborn in the mix you'll be picking up a fair chunk from the Earned Income Credit and Additional Child Tax Credit at tax time and that will go a long way to taking the financial pressure off as long as you don't get stupid and blow it on something unnecessary.
Contrary to what some uninformed responses claim, your income tax bill even before the credits will be nearly zero with a married couple and a child. (I've been doing taxation for over 43 years, they obviously know little about taxation.)
Without the child the tax credits go away and the taxes go up a bit, but the cost of raising a baby is gone too. The tax benefits are nowhere near enough to defray the cost of raising a child though, so you'd be under slightly less financial pressure even with the lower total available cash. |

Well is this 2400 a month before or after taxes. Take the taxes out and you probably are going to be left with 1800 a month then after that you got the rent which is 800 then we are at 1000. Then you have got food which is about 300. That leaves you 700. Gas ins, in my opinion no. But you know what is right for you. |

With additional bills and food cost and transportation cost that would be tight but doable I think. |

you will make due, if you spend wisely. Don't forget about Electric, gas, food, phone, cable & internet (optional) emergencies (like flat tire, doctor visit) oil change, beauty supplies (soap, toothpaste, medicine)
I rec. you save when possible in case of emergenies (and believe me, emergencies will come when you least expect it!) |

Simply, yes. That's pushing it. |

As I told you in your last question, it depends what the person considers "comfortably". I don't find apartment living "comfortable" in just about any situation.
It's also going to depend on if the $2400/month is take home or salary. If it's salary, it's going to seriously be pushing it, assuming they pay taxes. It's the 15% tax bracket and such a family would be paying about $3500 in taxes a year, placing their take home at about $25,000.
Making $25k, they may not be approved for an $800 apartment. An apartment $700 or under is their MAX.
For a 3 person family, the Federal Poverty Threshold is $18,310. |
