My fiance and I recently moved out of a place rented out by another couple. They were the worst landlords/roommates ever! To the point where they didn't give us a key because they were lazy. So, obviously, we went to Home Depot to make copies. We hated the place so much that when we left, we threw the keys out the car window when we had the chance. Now, they want the keys back talking about it's against the law and blah blah blah. Are these my keys or theirs? Should we have brought them back? Keep in mind that I'm not even disclosing half the crap we had to deal with. |

Just have to ask, if they didn't give you a key how were you able to have copies made at Home Depot? To answer your question, yes the keys should have been returned to the landlord. Once you moved they were of no use to you and throwing them out the car window was not only childish, but against littering laws. |

It does not matter who made the copy of the key. Once you vacate a unit you have no right to keep any keys. If you keep any keys then they can charge you to change the locks. Any other problems with them have nothing to do with this. |

They must have had a key for you to make a copy in the first place. What's happened to it?
How do they know how many keys you had?
You must have had at least one key. That's a given.
So, as long as nobody knows you had a few made, and as long as you gave one key back, nobody can say you have to do any more.
The rest is conjecture and would not stand up in any court.
Provided that you gave them at least ONE key back. |
