make sure you are registered and trained by an experience ice cream van vendor. also since you will be dealing with children, i think you might have to get a police check.
other things that are critical for business success is to know your target market and the potential customers. you want to be efficient with your time so find out where the customers are and find them. time = money. good luck |

You will be approached by smiling children with sweaty coins in their palms. The sun will beam through your van like a golden rainbow and as you fill in that childs cone with Mr Whippy :) |

you probably need a vendor liscense for the towns you want to sell in also and perhaps a sanitation permit showing that your truck is suitable to sell food from. |

Yes. think about your competitors..the price of their products..their customer..think of ways on how to lure customers..think of the "Pre-operating expenses" the expenses on buying van and stocks..compare it w/ your assumed income..well I guess i'll say this again.."Good luck and give your best shot"
P.S. Smile always and be friends to customers..it'll help a lot |

Well, you need to go down to the city and find out what all rules and regulations you'll follow and what licenses you'll need. |

Insurance (general liability and vehicle)
Maintenance of the van
Legalities (business license, vendor license)
Health code issues/certifications
Taxation laws (what areas charge 1% local option sales tax, which don't... etc)
Laws regarding the music and the hours and areas you can/can't play the music and at what volume (permits required)
Vending on public vs private property |

business license, good driving record for insurance...
I think ice cream vendors need to be cleared thru the police .. I remember reading something about it, in our area, because some were pervs doing this to watch children... call your local city office and law enforcement |

i would think special insurance. not just car insurance, but if somebody gets sick from having your product. you also might need a vending license or something like that to sell your product. |

You probably know this already, but....
Drive really, really slowly to give the kids time to run to mom requesting money and get back out there. You can't see the little ones sometimes. That would scare the heck out of me.
What songs are you going to play?
At least it's a happy job. Have fun!!!!
Oh, hey, it would be really neat if you could get dippin' dots! |

try finding out what routes other ice cream van drivers use, or try puting an advert in your local community centre or shop, telling people what you have planned, or ask any ice cream driver for ideas, prices, what music is to be payed etc, and get a BIG fridge for your stock (ice cream, food, drink, sweets) and also try to find out where you can get your stock from, and use microsoft word and excel to do a price list (try using google for images) one last thing, try to find out what design you would like to put on your van, also, find out if you can sell fags and milk (everytime i use the ice cream van, everybody tends to get this)
hope this helps
ps for the community centre if you like you could arrange an meetings with community staff, police, parents and ice cream people to make sure you are doing things legaly, or try going to your local council website or police website, and see if you can find out any laws etc |

Ok, this is real world advice, one of my good friends makes a very good living with his truck. When you get started, watch your back, if there is a large company with trucks in your area they will....lets say discourage you from being in business. (friends brake lines were cut by competition). Now here is a fantastic marketing idea for you.....businesses will pay you to park at their location. Auto Dealers are the best for this, they will pay you to hand out ice cream to "shoppers" to keep them on the lot longer. You simply "give" the ice cream to customers, keep track of what you've given out, and the Dealer pays you when you are done. MUCH easier than cruising neighborhoods to find customers, and NO GAS!!!! That is a large expensive part of your business these days. |
