I want to know if anyone knows how hard it would be opening up my own no-kill animal shelter in my area. I've realized that I will be putting out a lot more money than I will be bringing in, but that doesn't matter to me. I've wondered for a long time what I could do to help these animals that no one seems to want anymore. It breaks my heart to see all these animals without a home, abused, and just plain thrown out because they weren't wanted anymore. How would I go about opening one? Would I try to get businesses to sponser me? If I could I would take every animal home with me, but I just can't for obvious reasons. I've always wanted to do something where I would make an impact on someone or somethings lives, and with an animal shelter, I could help the animal, and the family. I will be posting this question in other categories, like small business, I just want to get a variety of answers. I'm just a 19 year old girl with a baby, australian shepherd, cat and a hamster, and a dream. <3 |

I don't know how hard it would be but I know in the US you have to have a business license to run anything...

Keep your dream a dream. You say you realize that it would cost more than it can bring in. How will you keep from becoming an animal abuser when you have a lot of animals, can not kill any and can not afford to get them food?
Take good care of your own animals and especially take care of your child. I love
animals too, but leave it to the big groups with charitable status. Go volunteer there. Then they can save more animals. Our local Humane Society is not "no kill" shelter by its by-laws, but it hasn't had to put down a healthy animal for years.
Most interested businesses wil give to the bigger shelters. You can also get on your local Animal Control Board and make changes there. There are lots of ways to help without starting your own shelter. You can foster. You can train dogs, so they are more adoptable. There are lots of ways to help. Fund raise. Then after you do some of these other things, you will better know whats involved in running a shelter. |

I have 11 cats, three dogs, several birds and a rabbit - all rescues. Been doing this a long time, but never "incorporated" or anything. It is a very expensive and heartbreaking path in life, so be prepared for that.
I would seriously recommend that you contact your local animal shelter or Humane Society and ask them to direct you to no-kill shelters or animal rescue groups in your region. Contact the groups and volunteer with them for several weeks or months so you can get an idea of how it all works. That way, you will be helping the animals in your area immediately (not waiting to get things set up) and you will be gathering contacts for when you do set your organization up. You'll need a network of people to turn to with questions, also, you can find out what veterinarians in the area are sympathetic and will work with you.

First research the city, county, state laws. Some localities require kennel license if you have more than a set number of animals.
Second, find out what it will cost to create proper housing for the animals. ( Dog Runs, horse stables, etc.)
Third, talk to a Veterinarian about an arrangement for veterinary services and an agreement about how you will pay. Vet's cannot afford to give their services and medications away, but might be willing to contract for a set fee per month for usual services.
Third since you can't possibly work a full time job, care for your child and tend to all these animals you will need to find a way to fund your shelter.
