First your not going to be able to start your own home based business without having to pay some start up costs like licensing, materials, etc. I'd suggest you look into ones that have low start up costs and the products are high in demand.
Most home based business's cost under $500 to start. Some do cost more depending on what it is your doing. My fathers cost $100,000. 17 years ago, That is also because he had to buy a boat for the line of work he's doing. However he makes over $800 a day now. Some days he makes $1500 a day. He loves what he does. He is a private six pack fishing charter company called WaveWalker. He makes an incredible amount of money. He's a senior citizen as well.
But most business's that you run out of your home are under $500.
Not knowing where all your interests are or your hobbies or anything, it's difficult to to point you out in the right direction. Or refer you over to web sites that would match your interest or business's that you would enjoy getting involved in. I can only tell you what my husband and I do and point you out to a couple different home based business's to take a look at and see which one would be best for you.
Over six years ago, my husband and I started our home based business in the telecommunication's industry. It well supports our entire family. We have 4 children ages 10, 6, 3 and 1. We got involved in a 15 year old world wide company that had been featured in several magazines like USA Today, Success, Fortune etc. Inc 500 rated us the 22nd fastest growing company. We offer services that people use every day and pay for anyway. Services such as local and long distance telephone services, Internet, digital, video phones, Satallite T.V., and all the major cellular phone companies like Verizon, AT&T, T-mobile, Sprint, Alltel, Nextell, Disney, etc have partnered up with us to.
How many people do you know, or know of, that have one or more of these services? How would it make you feel to be able to save people money on services that they are already using and paying for every day anyway, and everytime they pay their bills, every single month, month after month, year after year, you get paid a percentage? Think about the income opportunity in this industry. It's just incredible!

Your more then welcome to take a look at the different ones that I had people post on what they're doing, because I know they make a sufficient amount of income for their families as well. There are over half a dozen different ones on their to take a look at. Some are simple and some are harder. You have to chose which one you'd like to be involved in. No one else can make that choice for you.
I hope I've helped in this subject and gave you some inside tips on different home based business's and the fact of you do have start up costs.

You can easily start out for free by using a blog! Blogging is extremely popular these days, and many people make money doing it. You can set up a FREE blog at www.blogger.com or www.wordpress.com. It's pretty easy to do.
Since you are experienced with office equipment, there are many affiliate programs you can join for free and promote their products, earning a commission for each product you sell. You can probably find affiliate programs with office equipment type products at www.linkshare.com or www.cj.com
On your blog, you simply post to it like a diary. Try to post 2 or 3 times per week about your products, what their benefits are, and what problems your products will solve for your readers. Put a few ads and affiliate links on your blog, and soon you will find yourself making money with a subject you are already familiar with!

Rather than try to sell you on a multi-level marketing opportunity, I'd like to make a few suggestions, in the hopes these ideas might trigger some ideas of your own:
1) I lived in Florida in the early 90's, and am wishing right now I were there! :o) Think about taking advantage of your surroundings! If you're into digital photography, you could sell your photos (on your own site or there are sites that you could post them on for sale). If you know of a local artist who paints landscapes / seascapes / sunsets / beaches / sealife, ask if you can buy a bunch of them wholesale and have exclusive internet selling rights. If you know someone who is in the t-shirt business, see about coming up with your own design and having it made at a volume discount, then selling your design! Are you into SCUBA or fishing or parasailing? Find a small business that doesn't have a website presence, and ask if you can be their internet marketing arm!
2) Do you like antiques, or "beach" collectibles, or do you collect salt & pepper shakers or some other niche collectible? Maybe go to estate sales and pick up some treasures to sell at a profit - - other people in the estate sales industry may not be "online" yet, and there could be opportunities there.
3) I'd recommend taking a class in website design if you're interested in doing your own business website.
4) Draw on your sales/mgmt experience, whether in the office equipment industry or in an industry that's new for you! Set up your business and offer commission-only sales opportunities to other retired folks in your community.
