It's important that you build a list, as every small business owner needs to have for survival. You are building relationships first and with all of the competition out there, relationships are your vital life force. You are constantly filling your pipeline with new people and the best way I know to find like-minded people is to network on Facebook.
I have found that to be an excellent source of free advertising, providing you don't just pitch an advertisement out there. Since I started networking with it, people are adding me to their list all the time and many are looking for a home business. I also have a business card on there so those browsing my profile, know what I am doing.
I really can't think of a better way, since marketing has changed so much in the past few years.
Remember, most business-minded people are open to multiple streams of income and you can certainly find those people there.

If you are working over Internet you will find possibilities of making free or cheap advertising. There are quite some business groups whom one can join as well as traffic engines or search engines. Join a home business group or some other group in this direction. Write a Blog if you can. Through joining groups you will receive much information about what to do in the direction of advertising. Learning from each other is a great asset.
There are also business builders who are willing to give advice for free.
Advertising has to be learnt and it does sometimes mean having to invest. Afterall, that is in every normal business.
However, it is good to try and keep the expenses as low as possible at the beginning.
One important thing, read much, follow someone who has already gone the way so you can learn from them, and never give up even if the results you see are very little.

Ads in the paper help, posting fliers around town will probably be good, craiglist.com deffinately helps, and if all else fails you can always turn to grafitti. (kidding) |

Depending on the business type. There are many ways to advertise cheaply. First and foremost you have to advertise to the people who are going to buy from you. Putting a flyer in a store when you are selling an item that is similiar to what the store is advertising/selling in not the smartest idea. Not sure how this wroks but if you can e-mail, do so and I can give you some ideas :) |
