An online job does not require fees upfront. You have a boss that you will have to turn in work to. Medical Transcriptionist, data entry, even telemarketing are done online as work online jobs. Monster.com and CareerBuilder.com have listings for online jobs.
What you are describing are work at home business opportunities. Those will require upfront fees as you are working to own your own business.

You can check the legitimacy of a company at http://www.wahm.com message board which has a wise work at home community that provide alot of support. You could try doing online surveys like I do at this site. The online survey site I am a part of does not have any fees and registration is fee.
It in fact does really pay as other users have proven so.I have already made $20 and I just started two days ago. Payment is a check that comes to you in the mail. :)

I've been doing some work with www.elance.com the past week, all the work is home based, data entry, transcription etc. The only thing is you're competing against people from countries where the hourly rate of pay is a lot lower, so not sure if it would be worth it for you.
