Are franchise businesses a new form of pyramid selling?

No I don't think so. You can do well in a francise if you execute at your business. You do not rely on another franchisee to pay your way out of the business.

only the dodgy ones. if you're thinking of investing your starting point would be the British Franchise Association:

NO. Pyramid selling is just that: one person enrols 2 people and they each enrol 2 people. If anything is actually sold the profit is distributed down the pyramid, so the mugs nearer the bottom get nowt.
A franchise is a business idea that is leveraged to many people. The franchisee runs his own business, usually with management suopport from the franchisor and in return pays part of his profit to the franchisor. The franchisees can gain by economy of scale in purchasing for example. Of course there are good and bad franchises. Domino Pizza is an example of a very successful franchise.

Could be but usually no as a pyramid scam means making money by selling an idea to more and more people as opposed to providing customers with real goods and/or services often under a 'brand name'

The franchiser provides marketing and technical support to the franchisees and there is real substance to the whole deal

Silly World
Yes and No, obviously depends on the business
but defiantly not new

'Dr Greene'
No, that would be the UK Housing Market.

That also relies upon people at the bottom buying into it to remove your exposure.

Some are, some aren't.

If it looks to good to be true - it probably is!

Even if it is a good reliable long term franchise you need to be the right type of person to take it on and make it successful.

Hi there. No. But be very careful with your franchise choice. The Irish / British Franchise Association is a good place to start. There are also some websites which you can browse through and review franchises. BOL. John

No, subject to due diligence a franchise is a ligitamate form of a business. It is basically the sale of a business model that has been proved in one situation and you are buying the rights to try and profit from those rights in another, be it limited by area, customer or other. It can be a successful venture and it is easeier to start on the goodwill of an existing business than a brand new business idea.
