fitz b | Are home based businesses (like Excel, Amway, Avon, and Mary Kay) worth losing your friends over??? |
I know someone who is in one of these home based businesses. Everywhere she goes, she is passing out cards and giving her spiel, and in some cases, putting pressure on people. BUT what the problem is is that she doesn't realize that there are certain places that she needs to keep her mouth shut. A friend of mine just had her 35th birthday party and she was there handing out cards and talking the business. Without saying, this was absolutely annoying to most everyone because this was a party in honor of someone else. The thing is is that in order for you to be truly successful at this, you have to contact EVERYONE you know and annoy them. I've heard stories where people have told off their friends that if they don't back off, they will never speak to them again. |

I completely understand your frustration. There's nothing more irritating than a friend or relative constantly pushing their marketing every time they see you, regardless what their home-based business is. There's simply a time and a place for everything.
I have a home-based business and I even know when to speak about my business and when not to. When I first started out with mine, I asked my closest friends and closest relatives to help me hold classes. After that, I only contact the friends and relatives who actually buy anything or are the "party people". At that, they are lucky if I call them once in 8 months. I try very hard to be mindful and respectful to all my customers, regardless who they are. I will call my customers when the new books get mailed out and after that, if they want something, they've got my numbers. Outside of this, we (home-based individuals) shouldn't keep hounding those we know so closely.
Those friends and family members can refer you to others and sometimes they don't, whether it's because they have no friends, their friends wouldn't like to do anything with it, or just simply don't want to refer them. In that event, home-based business individuals should learn to step outside the box and find other successful ways to talking to people. Everywhere all the time doesn't always apply to family or friend events.
It's a matter of knowing your place and knowing when the place is right. |

^There is a time and place for everything, sounds like she's overdoing it.
The ironic thing is years ago I was a head hunter for an employment agency, I've always been a friendly person and talked to people I didn't know all the time, waiting in line, waiting for trains or buses etc.
When I became a head hunter someone would start talking to me or I would start up a normal conversation and after a while I found I was interviewing them, I would then apologize, because that wasn't my intent, the reason I'm telling you this is maybe she doesn't even realize she is doing this and needs to be told nicely. Good luck, I hope this helps. |

I have my own home based business. Keep it simple and in order. A social event is not business. The other side of the coin is; if I am asked what is new etc., I say ; I am involved with ________. I would be interested to tell you the particulars, but at a time that is best for you to fully benefit . When can I call you to set up a time? |

I am in a home business and I do not do that at all. Sometimes it comes up, but I do not do that to my friends. You should talk to her. She is just very passionate about it and may not even realize what she is doing.. A lot of people who do that then make friends who are similar to them, so they burn those bridges and move on. |

I used to sell avon way back in they day, and I hated how you had to put pressure on anyone and everyone that you knew! I felt at a loss to ever be able to work at home. I work for a new company now and love it! You dont have to throw parties or put pressure on anyone and there isnt a risky investment. Maybe you s hould talk to your friend and let her know how you feel. She could very well possibly think that nobody really is feeling pressured and not even realize what she is doing to her friends and family.
God bless!

No they are not, and I've tried 2 of the above plus about 3 more over the years. That's why I found a company where I don't have to sell therefore I'm not pressured to sign people up in my business. You friend will not make it being pushy but it sounds like she/he has incentive. In order to do mlm's, yes you do have to talk to everyone, that is why so many don't succeed. I know, I've seen it happen. Jennifer |

Boy, can I empathize with you. I've been involved in several network marketing companies, Amway, Mary Kay, and Petlane to name a few. I'm still involved with 2 of them because I love the products. The products that they offer are marvelous and I use them faithfully, but I agree, that I don't like asking close friends and family to be a part of it, I prefer to talk to strangers because of the "stigma" of network marketing. Its a sticky wicket. They tell you to contact everyone you know and although at times its appropriate, sometimes it isn't. I don't like pressuring or annoying people and I'm so sensitive to being pressured or annoyed myself.
Amway has great products but I hated the marketing plan and how they go about "Showing the plan". I left after 5 years with nothing but a credit card bill to show for it. I joined Mary Kay and I just adore the woman and her products but I hate the inventory loading that the directors push new recruits into. I prefer to order as needed and so I'm not a favorite with my director. But I will carry the Mary Kay products as long as I can because it works for me marvelously. I have lost money and only made a profit 1 year out of the 4 years I've been invested in it. Pet lane is another wonderful company with a wonderful CEO, but I hated doing pet parties, people are burn t out on home parties and I hated asking my friends time and time again to come. I would have a party and only 2-3 people on average came. The products are wonderful especially the items that Lane Nemeth herself designed. Wonderful toys for pets. But the shipping costs were killing me. So I drove to the warehouse and they charged me a warehouse fee which I refused to pass on to my customers. However, if you are a pet lover and looking for a great toy for a cat or dog, check out Petlane. The people in this company are wonderful. I just hated spending time and money on parties where noone hardly showed up.
My point is that although the products are wonderful, I hate pressuring people to support my business related endeavors.
I'm still involved with two companies and at the end of this year one of them will be terminated. I've lost more money on these endeavors than I have gained and I'm tired of it. I don't go for all the hype and hoopla anymore. I'm done. I would rather do an internet business and that is what I'm currently working on. |

It is unfortunate that your friend has not found a Mentor with proper leadership skills.
Your friend will be very successful if she learns from her activities......Time will tell. |

Absolutely not! It is not worth losing your closest friends for this type of business.
I have been there and done all that, in fact I did it for over 3 years and I can tell you some things that would shut all those guys down in 1 minute flat.
The network marketing juggernaut has worked out systems and have heard ALL peoples questions and objections for many years now. No matter what objection they have an answer that sounds feasible to the uninitiated.
My answer to anyone contemplating network marketing is to put your hands over your ears turn around and run till you drop. |

I know exactly what you're talking about and I have never liked network marketing for that reason. However, I have found a wonderful product that sells itself. You give it to people to try and they love it, they call you and want to order more. It is called Mona Vie, it is a fruit juice that contains the acai berry from Brazil. Oprah had Nicholas Perricone (the world famous anti-aging doctor) on her show and he endorsed the acai berry as the #1 super food in the world. It is unbelieveable. It is full of antioxidents, phytonutrients, fatty acids, vitamins etc. After drinking it for 3 wks, my arthritis is better than it has been in years, my psoriasis cleared up, my eyesight is better, my finger nails are stronger, I have more energy and I sleep better. The company is 2.5 yrs. old and has over 1 billion dollars in sales. It is growing at a rate of 22% a year. I can't look my friend in the eye and say that they need Amway soap, but I can look at them and tell them how phenomenal this fruit juice is because I am so passionate about the product. Also, the compensation plan is better than any other mlm I have ever seen. It also is helping to save the rain forest in Brazil . By harvesting these berries, the trees are being coveted and protected. The company also gives back to the community. They have given several million dollars to the poverty stricken children in Brazil. The company gives back 50% of their profits to the distributors. It sounds too good to be true, but I am doing it and it is unbelieveable! Go to mymonavie.com/debbiendon to learn more. If you are interested let me know. I will send you a bottle of juice to try. I can also refer you to some books and literature about network marketing. The wellness industry is a trillion dollar industry. 8,000 baby boomers a day are turning 60. |
