Whatever you do, don't sign up for a MLM system. I am not saying that none of them work, but the stats are horrible for making money through them. Also if you have to make an investment, particularly a large one, please throw it out. I suggest working for yourself. I do and it is the best decision I ever made. You will hear about how a couple of young people made it work, and didn't invest in anyone, except themselves, like web hosting and such. If you want to work from home, don't work for someone else, that is no better that working away from home. However you can freelance and accept a few temporary jobs until you get going. You can try freelance writing, bookkeeping, software, transcription or customer service work at home jobs. These companies do not require any fee and pay well . YES! I started a home based business 6 months ago and made $29K last month. The trick is to do your due diligence and look for the following: an exciting product that's in demand and you are excited about it, a turnkey system in place so you can leverage your time and most importantly - sign up under a sponsor or advisor that is making great money and can personally train you. And when doing your research, don't listen to all the people complaining that that particular home business didn't work for them. No matter what home business you research, you will ALWAYS find someone who failed. That's the whole point of being an entrepreneur, you're taking a risk. If I had listened to the people on the internet saying my particular home business is a scam, then I wouldn't be in the money-making position I'm in right now. Some people just aren't cut out to run their own business. I made sure that I found successful home business entrepreneurs who were willing to train me and then I just did what they said and I made money. It's that simple.

The ones that aren't scams actually require work on your part - and if you're in need of money soon then you're likely to be sorely disappointed in any of those as well. Most of the legit opportunities out there take time to build - so if someone makes an outrageous claim of income it probably isn't true ( and those that are true sure didn't make that kind of money when they first began ).

I have other ideas that may help - one of them is an online opportunity but another is one that will require a little effort to market yourself - try some data entry for local businesses, many of them don't have the time to do it in-house and will gladly pay someone else to do it. Professionals are a good place to start, lawyers, doctors, chiropractors, etc - they need their "in-house" folks doing other things rather than busy work.

There are tons of opportunities out there but be careful of scams and "jobs" that require you to put money up to use their program.

You could setup a blog or website, this is completely free. Once you have added some good content, you can start to earn money from advertising. I know you wont make a huge income from this, but it would get you started working from home.
Pick a topic which you are very interested in, and write a piece on that everyday.
I've given step by step instructions on how to create a website for free, and then add adverts to it so you can start generating income.
