Hi Nicola,
The business model that lends itself perfectly to working at home is affiliate marketing. If you can generate leads/sales for a service/product of a company, that company doesn't care if you've done that from home or from their offices or elsewhere.
The most viable option, in my opinion, is building a website, or a simple blog, on a specific topic that is interesting to you. You have to be passionate about a subject to be successful in the long run.
Once you got a medium/high traffic website on a subject, you can monetize your website/traffic using host of programs:
- Google AdSense and similar programs
- Affiliate marketing: advertise other products. You can find them in affiliate network websites like ClickBank or directly join the affiliate program of the company.
In selection of the affiliate programs, you may want to consider only websites which already receive high traffic. Check out alexa.com to check their traffic rankings (if it's below 80,000 or 60,000 let's say, they receive a descent traffic). Then, try to find complaints against the program, in sites like complaintsboard.com. Remember, there are always some complaints, just check whether there're too many. For some examples of top affiliate programs who actually deliver, head to http://www.doeverything.biz/index.php and check this month’s Top 10 list.

Well, first, watch-out for scams. They're everywhere, these days. The best advice I have for you is to check out something I found called "The Coffee House Letter," below. Real eye-opening stuff there.
