There are various websites that you can go to check for scams. I look at life like NOTHING is free! If it says free, no work, etc. - look out!
If you are looking for a direct sales business you can go to the Direct Sales Association at www.dsa.org . All companies must follow a code of ethics to be members. If not, here are some websites that you can look for reviews/scams:

Before I started my Lia Sophia business I researched the company on the Direct Sales Association website. Now I am so glad that I started my business because I am making twice as much as I made in my traditional job and only work a few hours a week. Most home business opportunities are scams.
I am a wholesaler of authentic designer merchandise... I work from home, I just bought some storage space, cleaned it up... and then put merchandise in it. And then of course I advertised a bit.
But now I make a decent income.

I think it is difficult to find honest reviews about companies. You don't know if the testimonials are genuine or made up. Also, I can refer you to the company I used to build my business (which I will do now - http://www.homemade-success.com ), but you don't know if I am just saying that for my own benefit or if it really is true. :-)
They taught me how to build a profitable business about something I enjoy, and I do happen to love the company but that doesn't mean much to you. Everyone says that. You could look at my business http://www.chocolate-candy-mall.com and that could give you an inkling that maybe I am telling the truth, but still...???
My suggestion is this:
1. Don't fall for anything that sounds like get rich quick.
2. Look at the company thoroughly yourself to get a feel for its integrity.
3. Go with your common sense and gut feeling.
4. Last but not least, if you are a Christian, pray about it and ask the Lord to lead you to the right one (that's what I did).
The other suggestions about the Better Business Bureau or good too. I don't know if they are able to keep up with all the stuff online, but it is worth a shot.

You can always check them out at www.bbb.org. Also, good companies can be members of the New York Stock Exchange, like mine. Also, look into Chambers of Commerce. www.ripoff.com is not reliable. It is mostly people's opinions and not facts. |

Things to consider are this.
The Better Business Bureau is a FOR PROFIT organization. People put too much trust in a company that has does a good job convincing people that they are some sort of official organization. It can be helpful, but alot of the claims against companies are actually made toward individual reps.
The other problem is that most of the websites that claim to watch out for people are also for profit websites and most of them lean towards an anti-mlm stance. I do not put much into ripoffreport.com, mlmwatchdog.com, etc...
Also it is very easy for competitors to post negative things about companies. They try and devalue a company by raising doubt of its legitimacy. Sling enough mud against the wall and surely something will stick.
