lee h | As a customer what attracts you the most to a restaurant? Family run feel or Franchise? |
Im currently designing a restaurant and needed to gather some research for the development of my final product. If anyone could help it would be greatly appreciated :) |

It all depends why I'm dining there. |

certainly not franchise. should be nice friendly and slightly different to other restaurants |

Well i go for good cooking, great reputation, decent pricing, amiable surroundings, some privacy.
So whether it is family or franchise wouldn't really bother me. |

Franchise - NOOOOOOOOO
Family - yes or better still not family but FRIENDLY.
We eat out most evenings and speed is our objective....make sure the staff are hot to take the order so the kitchen needs to be well equiped to cook my food FAST.
All the places we eat the staff know us by name and ask how we are - its a nice touch. Also we ALWAYS get a complimentry liquer at the end of the meal - thats great service and makes you feel very appreciated .
I like a cosy feel - especially tables with benches rather than chairs... but classy not diner cheap - I love Candle light, but no music. It distracts from conversation and its 'too personal' - especially if the staff play THEIR fav tunes and not what you like as a customer.
One place near me does incredibly well - they are PACKED and in the middle of no where so they are doing something right - they have a pizza pasta menu with a few specials such as steak or fresh tuna and salad. at lunchtimes - evenings the smarter set come in and they change to a better menu - eg : , french and italien , steak, fresh shell fish etc - fine wines - sat mornings a breakfast buffet - sun morning an amazing breakfast buffet inc brunch. |

Definately family run. Franchises are great but sometimes you don't get that value for money feeling and feel like a cog in a big wheel, one in one out kinda thing.
I would much rather go somewhere that has a homely feel and the food tastes home made and freshly cooked rather than a big franchise where sometimes the food tastes like it has been microwaved.
But don't forget the one thing that can make a huge difference. Your staff, good waitressess and waiters are worth their weight in gold.
In the US one night on our honeymoon we asked for lobster and our waitress said there was none left and walked off waiting for us to choose something else. Then another waitress came over (who had served us a previous night) and asked how we were doing, when we said we were disappointed she asked us to hang on a couple of minutes, then came back and said they could go out and get some for us if we were willing to wait! Now that is brilliant service. |

just trying to make a difference
|
definitely family friendly - even traditional adult places like an Indian restaurant near us are happy to see our little one when we take her with us.
good customer service is a main one, and somewhere to park.
other than that it must be great food!! we don't mind paying premium prices to get good tasty food, my other half went to catering college many years ago when he left school so he hates the big chains like hardy hansons who just serve microwave food.
it wouldn't bother me about being family run or part of a chain/franchise as long as the food and service were good and prices reasonable, but both service and food tend to be better in individual places rather than franchise places in my experience. |

definitely a genuine" Family owned and operated " The current trend of knockoff/ generic chain restaurants are mostly low quality inconstant and bad places to eat, In California we call them the ( 7/11 type ) well if you have any taste buds that is Example: dead lobster is called the 7 / 11 of seafood, overpriced inconsistent and never worth Calling food* rated right up there with Micky Dees and 7/11. If you want a hit n miss biz go for the chain stuff, if you want a thriving, consist ant and growing biz? definitely go real family restaurant, BTW you cant fake a family biz like some have tried ie: the olive garden... and other low quality high bulk cheap places... They are but a flash in the pan and will not carry a long term shelf life or profit margin. The impt thing about foamy owned operated? consist ant food quality and taste, real people real service, not some kid from up the street working there because they can get hired, wo does not give a ... about you me service quality etc just the tips salary and talking on their cell phone! There is a certain PRIDE in family OWNED/ operated ventures... this obviously does/ will/ can not occur in chain stores. Tradition is a family thing not a sales pitch for some low quality chain serving ( human automated vending machine services) |

well i love restaurants but I'm quite particular. food quality, price, service and atmosphere are the things that are important to me. Things like lighting and the seating plan (as much privacy as possible rather than tables on top of one another) and the level of the music in the background all affect me a lot. I like a restaurant that has a family run feel in the sense that if I go a couple of times it's nice to be remembered. If I find a restaurant that has my qualities I will go to it regularly. good luck with your restaurant I hope it's a success. |

Family run more often than not tends to give you that personal feel, a much more pleasant experience than a franchised outlet. The trouble with franchises is that they tend to follow a set rule to give the same experience whichever outlet a person may visit. It can be OK but not as welcoming as a family feel. |

I like the family idea, but its the food and service that keep me coming back. |

Family run feel definately. Also good food, good service and reasonably priced. |

Family run, for sure.
My brother once brought to my attention that people go to places like Starbucks because they always know what they are going to get. This is in terms of cleanliness, quality, menu and price.
Family-run is much more appealing to me but you have to achieve quality above the standard. Customer service is most essential. |

I like family run restaurants. What I look for is cleanliness, I hate it when you go into a restaurant and the table cloths are marked and the cutlery unpolished. Good food, not necessarily fancy but interesting. beautifully cooked and well presented. The staff you hire can destroy you, a friendly helpful and knowledgeable staff are worth their weight in gold! Above all value for money. A restaurant's reputation is made or ruined by not giving proper value for money. People do not mind spending if they feel they have had a good meal and good service. Remember restaurants live or die by word of mouth. |
