Just talking to a friend - an employee didn't show up & isn't answering the phone. Since it's only a few hours, I don't think I'd ask the police to do one at this point . . . when would be appropriate?

I would do the emergency contact route. I once worked with someone who disappeared shortly after starting (I started at the same time as he did) We were a little concerned because the week before his uncle had died suddenly and he both called and emailed the manager to let her know what had happened.
She called/emailed a couple of times and he finally admitted he was quitting. Not saying that this is the scenario here, but I hope that the employee is okay.

What's appropriate is leaving this matter to the family. If the person hasn't been in contact or seen for 24 hrs, they can file a missing persons report.
Unfortunately, a lot of people quit their jobs in this manner. Even tenured employees will sometimes just not communicate and quit their job.
It is appropriate, however, to attempt communication with this person until they communicate back. Perhaps contacting their emergency contact is the most appropriate course of action, but only if they repeat their absenteeism.
Unfortunately, you can be "too" concerned. |

Do you have emergency numbers on file (parents? siblings?)
I would call the emergency contact first. |

Maybe wait another day or 2. You don't want to invade in their privacy if you don't have to. I would try to call a family member or an emergency contact before calling the police....besides i don't think the police would do anything until this person was missing for 24-48 hours. Hope everything works out and nothing bad happened. |

It depends on past performance, the persons home situation, etc.
If I had an elderly employee that lived alone I would probably check on them today. The elderly can be injured or ill and unable to call for help. Send an co-worker who is close to the employee home a few minutes early and ask them to stop at the house to check on them, that way if it turns out to be a misunderstanding there will be less embarrassment. If things seem out-of-place call the police.
If the employee is young and immature and lives with family, I might consider writing them off and not followup at all. I know of a young employee still living at home that went to lunch and just decided not to come back. But if that seems out of character then check on them after 24 hours.

most employers won't I have worked in places where people did not show up for three days. They just took off the payroll and when they came back they say they abandoned their job. 3 or more no call no show is considered job abandonment. If they had called and said they were sick they would of kept their job. NO one called the police or even their home. I guess that is what family and friends are for.
Now i am very nice with my employers and they would call me if i did not show up one day and they would call in subsequent days but i don't think they would call the police |

If this employee is always on time (or has great communication skills ordinarily) I would call immediately, however if this employee is frequently late or does not have the best communication skills i would wait until tomorrow. (Also, depending on the type of job some employees use this as a method of quitting.) |
