In CA they get $10 an hour.
For pay you should have a price for 1 child then a smaller one for each additional.
Have your mother ask some of the other moms around your area what the going rate is. It is REALLY hard to find a good babysitter, so don't cheat yourself! You are providing a very valuable service! |

I'm in one of your neighboring states, have 2 school aged kids and also pay $6.00 per hour plus a bonus if we stay out extra late. Bringing your own supplies etc. I would probably pay you $7.00 per hour - couldn't really afford much more. |

just say something like this; I charge $6.00 per hour for children ages 6 weeks to 2 years. I charge $5.00 per hour for children 2 yrs to 5 yrs, and I will charge $ 4.00 for children 5yrs and up.

When I was in middle school and high school my sister and I both worked as baby sitters. however we were unique in the sense that we never set a pay rate. we told our patrons to pay us what they thought we were worth. This actually increased our clientele due the fact that many low income parents could pay what they thought was fair and what they could afford. It also allowed parents who thought you did a great job to pay you slightly more than they would have if the rate had been fixed. I suggest putting down "negotiable rates" when you advertise. Just make sure that you agree on rate and a time when the parents are expected home BEFORE they leave. also mention if they run late there should be an extra charge (your time is valuable as well). Negotiate what you feel is fair but be willing to turn down jobs that are too low-paying. In my opinion anything less than $4 per kid per hour is too low. for infants it should not be less than $6 per hour per child (they take more care) You should also expect more pay if you are dealing with more kids. Anymore than 5 kids( 2 infants) and you should consider bringing a friend to help and splitting the earnings. Good luck |

I got $8 an hour when I babysat in the late 80's but had a system by which we didn't sit in front of the television. Don't make a resume - make a flyer and ask current clients if they'd mind acting as a reference should people ask for one. Look at flyers for other businesses or events in your community. Make sure it's professional with no misspellings and use pictures of happy faces - even if it's just your family. Keep it clear and concise. Good luck! |

Payment is usually based upon the number and ages of the children, and may include a discount for weekly or monthly work. In the D. C. area, $10.00/hour is typical for a child under 3 years, $8.00 for an older child. Larger metro areas pay better than small towns, of course. |
