Be your own boss???? So many decisions! Help!?
I am a full time stay at home mom, and i want to look into doing something as my own boss and bring home some extra cash each month, enough to spoil myself and my family with or buy new things when they break. I don't want to risk going to work for someone else and then down the road, having more children and having to leave work again. I am looking at AVON, Mary Kay, Quixtar, Pampered Chef, however i am not sure what route to go. Any insight to those listed above, or any other similar company would be welcome....both positive and negative input please.
Additional Details
A lot of these responses are insightful, however i am also looking for input to the companies i listed above. I have researched quite a few already, and would love to have some insight as to the experiences people have had with them.

I applaud you for wanting to be your own boss.

Yes, you are already getting your first taste of what it's like tobe your own boss - making decisions. Being your own boss means the buck stops with you and that CAN be frightening!

However, I gather your situation now is not as critical as many people I've come to know, so you have time on your side. This is good because you'll want to take your time to find the right niche for yourself. I personally have heard of good AND bad about a couple of the opportunities you mentioned. This leads me to believe that it's not so much the opportunity itself, but whether the person matches the opp in terms of skills, abilities and passion.

From the business' point of view, they need as MANY reps as they can get. They are fair in the sense that they will give EVERYONE an equal chance to make it. Of course along the way, you would have made some financial decisions in their favor - paid for membership, training manual, products etc. So even if you find out later that that particular business opp is not the right one for you, they don't lost anything.

So what I am saying is that YOU and YOU alone shoulder the responsibility to find the niche that best matches YOU. Take your time to research the opportunities carefully.

And finally, don't get stuck thinking that these types of work-at-home opportunities are the ONLY ones available to you. If you are as enterprising as you sound, you can carve out a niche yourself and build YOUR own home based business around ANYTHING that you are passinate about.

Here's to your success... cheers!

Hi

I've just started with Mary Kay but in the past I have always worked at a side business. I've done Tupperware, Housesitters, Courier, Newspaper advertising, etc.

MK is a business with a lot of potential for long term earnings but you have to have money to invest for stock. Then you have to build up regular clients. At the beginning like any new business your costs will likely exceed your income. If you give up easily or can't wait to make money MK is not for you. If you have time to train and build your business it's very satisfying and challenging.

Best wishes

Here is some information on Pampered Chef. I am a consultant of 9 years. (Sorry if this gets long.)

When a consultant first starts, they get 20% of their sales. Once they reach $15,000 in career sales (total of what they have ever sold), they get 22%. During the month, as their sales get higher, the commission rate goes up and can get as high as 27%. As you build your team, you receive overrides on your team's sales. We do not have territories and PC consultants are usually very helpful to each other by sharing ideas and welcoming people to meetings. Pampered Chef has a very generous host program. The company offers the host benefits and bonuses, so that does not need to come out of your pocket. Most people will book the party for the fun, the existing host benefits, and the food, so I normally don't offer an extra incentive. Pampered Chef also provides the service of running credit cards without us having to pay for the service. We have the option of subscribing to a personal website to help us advertise and manage our businesses.

In the downturning economy, people go out to eat less, and spend less on luxuries, so they are more likely to have parties and buy kitchen tools so they can prepare meals more efficiently at home. Sometimes it is a little tough to keep your calendar full, but perseverence is the way to beat that.

Pampered Chef has wonderful training resources: your recruiter/director, printed materials, downloadable audio and video training, semi-annual training conferences, and periodic regional training. If you want it, you can have training materials coming out of your ears!

Contact me through my profile if you would like more information. I can direct you to my website or "snail mail" you some information. I would love to help you be your own boss if The Pampered Chef is what you choose!

A on line travel business is something to seriously consider.

http://amazingtoursandtravel.vacationmedia.net

I could go into paragraphs of details but the link above will provide you pages and pages of information. Travel is something that people do all the time. Just look at the lines at the airport, the cruise ships are always full and the hotels are almost always booked. 80 percent of people are booking on line anyway. Those big travel sites and airlines take their customers money and spend millions and millions on endless advertising. This travel business takes the money and returns it to their agents in forms of commissions. Additionally, when you have a home based business, there are numerous "business related" tax deductions you can claim. A home business also provides you the chance to give someone else an opportunity and chance in life. The companies you mentioned in your post are all upstanding. However, and this is just my opinion, travel is something that appeals to all people.

My wife and I are involved with YTB and I plan on quitting my day job in no more than 2 years. We chose YTB over the others for a number of reasons. Some of which I've listed below. But here were two of my main reasons 1) No inventory 2) I'm not selling a generic version of something that people can get from Wal Mart for 50% less than what I'm selling it for. I'm selling the same travel at the same or better cost that Joe Schmoe consumer can get at Expedia, Travelocity, Orbitz, et al.

1) YTB is a publicly traded, 7 yr. old company who is on target to be the largest internet provider of travel by 2011. When you consider Barry Diller paid in excess of $5 bill for Expedia 4 yrs ago, you gain perspective of the size of the market.
2) There are currently over 145,000 company reps and the number is going to double in the next year.
3) YTB has gone international. We are now in Canada, The Bermudas, and The Bahamas with plans to branch into Europe and Asia in the near future.
How and why is this happening?
1) travel industry exploding because of baby boomers
2) internet commerce exploding
3) company leadership
4) comp plan
We’re talking about a min investment of $, leveraging your contacts and reputation, while keeping your time involvement limited. This is a dynamic company that will accomplish its goals while changing people’s lives financially, with or without you. Let me know your thoughts and, thanks again for looking into it.

Here are my sites. www.travelop.info and www.flybymetravel.com

I decided to do Mary Kay simply for the product discount. I loved the product and used it for years. My consultant stopped selling it so I found someone new who asked me if I would ever see myself selling it. I quickly respond NO. She provide me the facts almost a year later when I wanted to be home with my children I decided to research the company first I found a very smart business plan and realized even if I didn't sell it I could get my products a half price so there my journey began. I couldn't believe what I found I never expected to like it or to be able to quit my job. I found personal growth I didn't think I needed uplifting positive people and the most importantly ability to quit my job and be home with my children. I love the company and the product since it is consumable you get a reorder business and I found it to be about providing a service to customers not a quick sale and go I build relationship with people that I now call friends. I would never sell anything else because to me it is sharing something I love whether it is the opportunity or the product.

I've been selling Avon for a year now. I love it. I started selling for the discount but I stayed for the money.

Its affordable and has something for everyone and that makes it easier to find customers. You dont' have to have parties unless you want to. There is no minimum orders or inventory requirements. All you need to sell AVon is the brochures. It only costs $10 to sign up in person Or $20 to sign up online.

I sold Pampered Chef and Country Peddler (now At Home America) and both those required doing parties. It meant lugging stuff to display and putting on a demonstration if I was lucky enough to book the party. Parties are hard to book and many times nobody even shows up whether they said they were going to or not. It just didnt work out for me.

I have always loved Avon and when I found out what it took to start and what you got...I ran out and signed up and I wish I had done it sooner.

In the past year I have sold over $20,000 in products. I have also started leadership and make a commission on my downline as well. I will say in order to be successful you do need to put time and effort into your business. You can schedule it around your family which is the beauty of it but you do need to do the work.

For your first campaign you will earn 50% commission when you place your order online. For your Second, Third, and Fourth campaigns, you will earn 50% commission provided your orders are greater than $50, and you place your orders online. After your first four campaigns, the commission structure is as follows:
Order Size Earnings
$1550 or more 50%
$900 - $1549 45%
$425 - $899 40%
$285 - $424 35%
$145 - $284 30%
$25 - $144 20%
$00 - $24 0%
Licensed products are earned at 20% commission.

As long as you don't buy alot of your own products you can make money. Leadership is the other way to making good money selling Avon.

I have more info and Avon Faq's on my profile. Feel free to contact me if you have any other questions.

Hi Lynn,
Have you ever considered building your own website and making money from it? I know lots of stay at home moms who are doing it. Me included.
For example, if you love to garden. Combine your knowledge of gardening with more research from the internet or books and magazines.
You then create a website about gardening.
Then you find companies who will let you sell products for them and get a commission on the sales of those items by putting links on your webpage to send your visitors to where they can shop.
For example, sell specialty seeds, or sun hats, or garden aprons.
You can also write ebooks and sell them from your website.
For example write an ebook about how to plant spring bulbs or how to get your garden ready for the winter.

You can also place google adsense ads on your website and make money when people click on the ads.

The nice thing about having your own website is that you are very flexible to be available for hubby and children when they need you. No boss or company is controlling you and you get to pick any theme you want for your site because it's your very own business.

Linda
