I run my own business. It is a heck of a lot of work. Every customer is my boss. I take on all the risks. My part-time employees make more money than I do. All that said, the thing I like best about being my own boss is never having another performance appraisal.
If you are interested in running your own business, look at the downside first. See if you can tolerate that. Also, be prepared for massive mood swings. When you have a good day, you will feel on top of the world. When you have a bad day, you will feel suicidal. Make sure you have support around you and that you have enough money to live on for 3-5 years while you get your business off the ground.
Personally, I love it. I worked in high tech and was laid off six times because of mergers and the tech crash. I always thought working for someone else would be more secure. Surprise! It wasn't. |

it isnt all that great believe me.....you cant "call in sick"...you rarely have a day off. EVERY problem is YOUR problem. Every operating cost increase comes directly out of your income. The only way I would have my own business again is if the business had tremendous room for growth and could run by itself....like in "retail"..Owning a business that provides a "service" is much more difficult. |

Felt impelled to respond to this question and some of the 'Answers' above...
N C hit the nail on the head with some sound advice, but ...jess..., I have to totally dissagree!

This is the bleak reality of running your own business... You have to be a strange kind of person to endure it, but if you can, it does have it's peculiar rewards.
To be successful in business, you have to be able to survive on just beans on toast and water for some months, yet aspire to be as wealthy as Richard Branson, be happy to work 18 hours a day for less than the minimum wage, have a supportive partner who knows that he/she comes second to the business and your customers, and be mentally strong enough to bounce back after setbacks.

Get up when you want. Answer to noone but yourself. More flexible hours. You will probably make more money. You sound big when you tell people you have your own business. You get to tell people what to do. |
