Which is more important to you, a job, or your hair? Yes, your employer has the right to have you stand up to a certain look, especially if you are in the public eye. There are certain things we must do to maintain a professional appearance, and if having a more traditional hairstyle is part of the standards that your employer has set, you must comply. |

Yes. As Jon T. said before me, they hired you at will and can fire you at will. If your employer has not issued the requisite written warnings, you will still be eligible for unemployment compensation.
My advice: if you can handle living on unemployment for a while and can expect to find another job reasonably soon, then you can let your long hair ride UNTIL you get a written warning. Once the written warning comes, cut your hair. If you need your full income and/or can not reasonably expect to find another job soon (you don't say in which industry you work), I'd recommend that you visit the barber ASAP.
In the meantime, I'd also recommend that you look for a job/ employer with policies that more closely suit your needs.
Good luck. |

First of all look at your dress code on the paperwork you got from your employer when you started out. If you signed anything that said that you have to keep your hair short, you are SOL. Otherwise, contact a lawyer and see what your rights are as an employee. |

just cut your hair. it's not like it won't grow back.
and in the past, women's hair would be shaved off if they did a crime...
or something like that...
i love my hair.
or you could work at mcdonalds where there are no hair codes. let all the hair you want fall into the food =] |

Unfortunately, in a non-union shop, employers can fire you for hair. Disney has a rule about beards and moustaches, and won't keep a person on the payroll who grows facial hair (which means ol' Walt couldn't work at his own company 'cuz he had a moustache!)
Try combing it differently, and start looking for a new job - there are plenty of good places to work that don't give a damn about your hair, but rather how you work! |

In my profession, you would be fired. We have a dress code. There are restrictions on men's hair. I have actually seen a man choose his hair over his job. Very sad. |

You are hired at will and can be fired at will. If you have not been given the proper warnings though (verbal, written, lvl 2 written) you will be able to collect unemployment benefits if you have worked there for a certain period of time (differs by state).
I wouldn't get to crazy about it though because if they don't fire you for your hair they will nit pick your performance until they do find a reason to fire you or until you quit working. Non conformists and business don't work well. Unless you're a tattoo artist or rock star.... you get the point. |

At will you can be terminated for any reason or no reason at all. But I would ask to see the dress code policy (which usually includes hair/nails etc.
A company I use to work for would fire male employees with earrings. |

yes... this can happen. one of my friends had hair roughly the same length and he wouldn't cut it so he got fired. another friend was threatened with being fired if he did not shave his beard. if you like the job, i would cut my hair. you can always grow it back if you quit or whatever. |

If your company has a written policy on appearance, you can be fired if you don't comply. Check your employee manual. |

I fellow worker was hired at a restaurant, and she had really long nails, even at the time of hire. About 10 days into it, the boss asked her to cut them, the girl did not comply. A week after she was asked they fired her, stating a different reason for her release. Is it discrimination if she was really let go because of her nails? |
