If they litterally gave it to you and said show up at 8 on monday then it is illegal unless you didnt pass a drug test or a backround check. or even if you lied on the application.

Yes, yes they can. If for some reason you did not pass the background or drug screen, they can retract their offer. Background checks usually include employment history checks and education. If there is something on your resume/application that wasn't 100% accurate, they will find out. Most employers expect employees to embellish on job titles and GPA's, and they look for that on background checks. Are you sure you had nothing to hide?
Try getting in touch with the hiring manager or recruiter. Ask them what happened. They should be able to help you. If you all of a sudden can't reach them (most likely because they're ignoring you or giving you the run-a-round), you should just walk away from that company and seek employment elsewhere. |

Unfortunately yes. I do not believe there is any legal recourse for that action. Was the offer given with the stipulation that you pass a background check or a drug test? Those circumstances are pretty common. An employer will be tickled with the candidate during the interview, then does more reseach only to find big old skeletons in the closet. If the employer made the offer, then simply changed their mind, no matter how hard up for work you are you do NOT want to work there. There would be troubles later on, trust me |

If you have it in writting and can prove you quit a job or lost income then you can sue.
If nothing is in writting or you can't prove any loss then not much you can do. |

Depends on where you are located. Here in Texas it is "at-will" employment so that would be completely legal. |
