Can a restaurant/lounge refuse service to a customer without giving a reason?
An eighteen year female patron to a restaurant/lounge was told one evening upon arrival that she could not be served until she spoke to the owner first. Consequently, the night before she was told by the karaoke DJ, "You don;'t really think that you'll be singing here tonight, do you?" This DJ happens to be her ex's bestfriend. This guy has verbally insulted her many times in other places she patronizes and and deliberately blackballs her. He also takes credit for getting her 86'd and takes pride in accomplishing that. Is my friend's civil rights protected by the UNRUH ACT and Ralph Act? We live in a small city where everyone knows each other. This guy single handedly ruined my friend's reputation which has caused her great emotional distress at a time when she was already diagnosed with depression. She had to leave the country for four months to recuperate. She's back now but eleven months later, this whole thing still doesn't sit well with her. What can she do about it?

From your description she wasn't refused service but was asked to speak with the owner first.... Could be the owner heard some bad comments about her and wanted to hear her side of the story...

By the way, where are you that they allow 18 year olds in bars????

mickey g
any business has the right to refuse service for any reason. its their right as the business owner. but she should talk to the owner and let him know what the ex is doing. he isnt allowed to treat a customer that way. only the owner has the right

Any business owner has the right to refuse to serve whoever they like.

Yes they can refuse service.

Debbie
The previous answers to your question are partly correct. A business has the right to refuse service provided they are not doing it for an illegal reason......i.e. age/race discrimination, sexual orientation, etc. Sounds like that wouldn't apply here though.

Most of those places are borderline dives anyway.

well, the "lounge" part of the establishments leads me to assume this was some type of bar (as well as the fact there was karaoke). The fact that your friend is 18 is grounds for refusal because it's illegal for her to drink! Many bar owners don't allow minors to even enter their bars just to play it safe. So I don't think this would hold up in court as unfair or violating her civil rights. As for her ex's friend, he's probably just a loser anyway, so she should ignore him!

It is time to move on and get away from there. No this may not be easy but it is beter than staying where you are not wanted even if it is not your fault.

The business can refuse service as they want.

Your friend's only recourse is to take the ex/friend to court and sue for libel but its not a great idea as it will cause more stress, especially if she doesn't win.

Maybe its time for her to move out of this small city and move on to a better life?

If I were your friend I would stay away from those places! Why would she want to go to a restaurant or bar that didn't want her business? If this guy is spreading false rumors about her, maybe she should talk to a lawyer about suing him for slander. That may be the hardest route to take, but if she can't live a happy life while being in that town, then something has to be done.

dude file a case in a consumer n if ur not of the ethinicity of the lounge owner u can file 1 for discrimination too not only u can take ur revenge but also u an earn quik big buks
