We were told from management that since clients can hear what we listen to from our cars when we pull up to the building, we are not allowed to play our music too loudly when we are pulling up to the office. Can they do that? |

Management can make whatever rules they wish, but you don't necessarily have to work there. If this is a deal breaker then be ready to walk away and find some place better. Now, if they are telling YOU this and no one else then you may have a discrimination issue but it does not sound like this is the case here.

if it's their private property ..you betcha..an employer can have "rules" on any portion of their private property...if it's public property that you park on like the street, they really can't. |

Why would you not follow the recommendation. Do you think it will enhance your companies success if you offend a client? Why would you make an issue out of something so unimportant and easily complied with?
I think you should go into business for your self and that way your attitude will only be destructive to your business.
Grow up.
Oh, by the way, they can tell you to turn down your music. |

This is really a non-issue. BE PROFESSIONAL. It sounds like it is bad for the business and bad for you. Bumping as you pull up isn't the image you want to portray if you are really trying to get ahead. |

Yes, they can establish policies that pertain to anyone on their premises. They aren't telling you what music to listen to, just how loudly you can listen to it. |

They aren't telling you to listen to a certain type of music, they're just asking you to turn it down...show them the respect, what's it going to hurt if you can't blast it around the office? Not everyone likes every type of music... |

They are providing you a job.
They are trying to run a business.
They are asking a reasonable request to not intrude on other people's space (via sound) on their property.
Gee... those mean people! What are they thinking?
I say you sit in a handicap space and blare your music. |

If you're on company time and visiting clients then they can. If you're just driving to work and are listening to music loud as you park, that's different. It is kind of rude to drive through around office buildings with rock music blaring. Just be respectful and turn it down as you pull into the parking lot. |

Actually, if your on their clock and they are paying you for your time, I would think yes. As long as you are going to clients homes or offices. It sounds like they aren't really telling you what to play, just keep it down, so as not to annoy the client. People make judgements about other people based, sometimes, on the music they listen to, not that it is a valid judgement... but you are representing your employer (the one that signs your check) when you are making your business calls so you need to respect the type of image your employer wishes to present. It is business, not personal. |
