Can another person open up a store selling the same thing that i sell on my store?
My dad has had a clothiong store for 13 years now i help him , but 2 years ago this lady opened up a store of supposely toys and accesories , but when she saw that we were selling better clothes than what she was selling , little by little she started to sell clothes and now its another clothing store next to mine but the worst thing of all is that she is always copying my styles and prices. i would like to now if someone nows if its legal to have another store next to mine selling the same things. I am in los angeles area.

i am sorry to say it, but it is perfectly legal. like the other guy said 'its competition'. picture walmart, how easily people overlook small family owned businesses just for the sake of convenience. sure, people can develop their pictures here, buy toys there, and perhaps get some clothes over there, but why would they do that if there is a massive corporation with all that inside of it. now starbucks, do you think, for the sake of example... bare with me, 'il caffe di papa' a little family owned cafe shop is thrilled by having starbucks next door? no! but they cannot do anything about it... its competition.
just try to give her a taste of your own medicine. get a big sign that reads 'original clothes... unlike the leading competitors' and have an arrow pointed in their direction or 'better clothes than the other guys' or how about 'we were the first to sell clothes before any of my neighbors' =] ...i would chose the last one

isn't capitalism wonderful?? you just gotta beat her out

Oh...it's legal and you can do nothing but join and sustain competition. Work harder, bring out better and better ideas, make sure you're the first to come up with something trendy or fashionable, don't be afraid to risk, lower the price a little bit, but change it like in the morning...things like these. It's a tough world we live in.

It is a free country..you treat your customers with kindness and respect and you will build up a steady customer list..they will tell their friends and word will spread what nice people and how helpfull you are..it is too bad she had to furnish her store with the same as yours, but there is nothing you can do about it..sorry. is she licensed to sell clothing or just toys and accesories? ou might also place a very tasteful sign saying {name of your store} established in 1993. which tells your customers you were there 1st .

This is very legal, it is called competition.

It's completely legal, that is called free market now days. But it's not legal if you have an exclusive representation of the clothe you're selling, specially if the store is next to you, in the area that you have the representation.
I hope that helps you.

Look think you have been in buisness for 13 years surely people can and could have chosen to buy from somebodyelse, instead chose to do buisness with you.Now ask yourself WHY? Then start focusing on doing what works.Do what you have done for 13 years and continue to develop better product lines.Find more places to whom you conduct buisness with, buyers and sellers, to be competative in todays market.
Keep in mind when somebody wants something, they want it now, and sometimes will spend more, if they like the SERVICE they are givin, from the time they step in,till the time they leave and comeback.Treat everybody the same, even the same person that looks in window for 2 years at something they want and you make them feel welcome for 2 years they will come to you.Dont try to be a follower like she is!Thats why you have been there, your father created that buisness with doing stuff to stay on top, and offered great products at an affordable price, and focused on service to customers.
Now its your turn to help do research on computer and learn more about giving and careing about customers needs.Best way to find out is simply ask! if they are satisfied and if there is anything that you can do, to make it more of a pleasure to shop at your store and do it, if all possible, and in return they will see you are going out of the way and doing what you say, to make them happy, they will tell everybody which makes more buisness.
If your place is clean, friendly, great products,to fit everybodys budget, then you should have no problem being the leader and the rest will follow and soon be left behind or forced to close doors.
Great buisness isnt cheap ,and you arnt neighther. Your prices have to be justified by the sevice and great products you have to offer. So if they want cheap let them shop next door, while your profits and reputation will grow and theirs stays same or falls.
