Depends on the company policy and the laws of the state you are employed in. But yeah, in many circumstances, he can totally fire you for being late even just once or twice, as long as he is consistant and would fire anyone else who was late as well. |

That depends on each company's policy, if it is the company policy, then yes they can. Most companies have a written policy about lateness and absenteeism. |

If you are an "at will" employee, you employer can fire you at anytime for almost any reason that isn't barred by law. |

it depends on your employment terms/ contract, if there is a clause saying that you could get fired based on it you can be shown the door........
Now in your case, well you just have to rush back to your mother and tell her that you are going late........ |

You better pray, that he stays with your mom.Because if he does not you will be terminated in a New York second. You problably late twice weekly. You need to create positive working habits for yourself. If you are 20 minutes late, make a point to get up 25 minutes early the next day. Offer to work late when needed and you will create a good impression. Your actions can create a hostile work environment among other employees who will view you as the boss pet. Believe they will gossip about
it, and it won't be nice. Gossip rumors are very destructive. |

Hmmmm . . . how late were you? Once or twice in how long of a period of time? How long have you worked there - are you still under a probationary time?
If your excuse is valid, it's not a frequent ocurrance, etc....there's a chance he has a slight vendetta against you - but that's not the first thing I'd think.
Try talking to your boss and if it seems like it might blow up into something more, document the situation thoroughly and keep it on file if you need to file a grievance or unemployment.
Seems like there should be more to the story though. |

If you are on probation, your boss could fire you because it was a day ending in 'y'.
As far as a good excuse, how could being your mom's b/f matter? If you've proven unreliable in his eyes, he might see you as more of a detriment to his business.
Mom can't write you a note forever, y'know. Become an adult and be responsible for your own self. |

depends on where you live. I live in Ohio and Ohio has the at will employment thing, so basically I could walk in with a bad haircut and get fired. |

Check your employer handbook. Where I work, if I'm late one minute...YES!! 1 min.... it's considered an occurrence. If I'm late three times in a three month period, I'll be placed on a verbal. 5 occurrences (occurrence is a call out or late) within 6 months and I'll be on a written. Within a year I'm late or call out for a total of 7 occurrences, I'm out. But, your employer HAS to be sure you understand the policy during orientation. Then the attendance policy should be re-visited at least once a year so that the employees know where they stand and what is expected from them. |

your boss can fire you when ever he wants to...
I am amazed he got away with hiring you in the first place, that's a HUGE conflict of interest... |

Well, you could get fired for anything these days. Being late is one of them. It just depends if your a hard worker or not. |

Unfortunately, in America your boss can fire you for whatever reason is good enough for him. |

It usually depends upon the state you are in. Also the terms of your contract. Thinking and using that excuse is unfair to your mom and her boyfriend. It sounds like you are taking advantage of the fact that your mom is involved with your boss. I would not be late any more. |

He can fire you. Usually you have to have been warned or at leas the incedent documented. You may have signed a company policy where you were hired and that will or could support his decision. Business is business. |

It's not a matter of how many times you were late but how many times you were late compared to your co-workers. Having your boss be your mum's boyfriend probably helped in maintaining your current position but if he wants his company to thrive, he have to think beyond the individual.
I'm you're only late to work for once or twice (literally), he probably won't fire you. He could, of course, but the possibility of it is slim unless the company's downsizing. |

Well yes and no. You see it puts him in a hard place with that. By you coming in late it may feel to him that your taking advantage of him b/c he's your mom's boyfriend. That's not cool. As your boss he can fire you, maybe not now but you're giving him much reason to do so. He may talk to your mom about it if it becomes an huge issue (like you're coming in all the time late) and he may give you the benefit of the doubt. Or he may just fire you and explain it to your mom why and she might agree (that might suck even worse!).
But don't give him any reason to think that way- plus use this as a lesson, you're lucky that you got that leverage, but make it a practice to go to work on time!! You may not have it as easy at another job!! |

You most likely signed an employement at will agreement when you started, that said you can quit at any time for any reason, and you can be fired at any time for any reason. |

Speaking as a Human Resources Manager from Oregon, I'd say yes, especially if there is a policy about tardiness that has been made known to you. Different states have different regulations about firing, but it sounds like you're not taking your job very seriously. The fact that you're working for your mom's boyfriend shouldn't have any effect on your performance.
*gets down off soapbox*
Now, get out there and find a career that will motivate you to be punctual and passionate! |

I used to manage a Papa John's in IN and here you can fire them for any reason if they are still in the 90 probationary period. |

If your state is a "fire at will" state then yes, your boss does not have to have a reason to fire you. You should look on your state's unemployment insurance website they normally know (for obvious reasons lol) |

You could get fired for anything these days. I've watched change management come in and just let everyone go from the controller, the IT, and anyone else of importance because they wanted total control and loyalty to themselves.
I've seen vice-presidents crying in the bathroom before they were led out to the parking lot by security after getting a pink slip on a friday afternoon just like everyone else and they had been great performers who had done nothing wrong. It was all political.
I've watched people show up for work after being hired and told there job had disappeared already.
Seen HR departments celebrating the "free worker" as the next big thing. That's where they bring in people as interns to work full-time for free. Even slaves got food and housing.
Then there's all those poor people with deformities from arthritis (rhematoid/psoriatic) and unsightly issues like psorisis that don't qualify for disability. Do you really think anyone is hiring them?
I could go on and on and on...
Welcome to the 21st century American employment environment. And it will persist until we change it as a people. |
