Yes you can, and you can also get scammed really easy if you are not careful.
As you noticed, you got a lot of solicitations from your questions and probably will get more. A lot of these people have copied and pasted there 'speach' on every question related to this.
A good webiste is entreprenuer.com, they have several ideas for home based and internet based companies. You can always check with the Federal Trade Commision on what there review is of a company.

yes by having an information website rather than an online store - if it is good quality information which people want to read, is correct and informative, and you keep the site relevant to one topic then you could get a good rate of traffic and people returning to the site
money can then be made through a variety of methods - you could sell direct advertising space, banner advertising etc on your site to pet stores, pet food stores etc (just let them know about your site the benefits they'll get from advertising on it, ie getting right infront of their target customers)
you could use advertising schemes like google adwords, where they place adds on a section of your site - these adds will be related to the information you have on the site.
you could use affiliate schemes (read the info this site for more details http://www.affiliatewindow.com ) where you get to choose which companies adverts go on your site.
or you could sell a small number of books/e-books etc on the topics you are covering
i should imagine that it would take some time to build up the site, it's reputation and be able to make much money from it, but i'd think it would be worth it in the long run.
i think the idea you mention on letting breeders advertise could be a good source of revenue for you.
