My fiance' and I wholesale women's (juniors) apparel. We need a name for our business. At the moment we have a cool t shirt line, mid-priced and a premium denim lines, a jacket line and a premium top line. Lines change though... so we don't want to limit ourselves by any one particular segment of our market (ie. denim something or junior something). I thought we'd ask for suggestions using this format. Since any names that are suggested here may already be owned by another party, I wanted to go a different route...
I suggest either hiring a name creation firm or get together with your friends and/or family and throw a "name party" & have everyone bounce some ideas around. Compile a listing of names that you like the best. Once you have that list, do as much free research as you can before you delve into comprehensive research.
I listed some links where you can do some preliminary name checking. However, please be aware that this is merely scratching the surface of what's out there.
Only comprehensive research will tell you if the name is truly available. But, these links are free & a great place to start, so I'd try them out first.
Comprehensive research consists of looking at marks that are similar in Sound, Appearance or Meaning in the pending & registered Federal AND State trademark files as well as the US National Common-Law files.
There are other sites that offer free searching capabilities in conjunction with their commercial services, so I'm not able to post those links due to the Yahoo! TOS. You'll also want to check domain names & yellow pages, so simply do a search for "free domain name search" and "national yellowpages" and the appropriate links will pop up.

I suggest something with a name that sounds impossible but opens the imagination. For example, the other day, I was walking through the mall and saw a music supplies company names "Lifestage" the name struck me as brilliant and made me want their products, just for the name. I know that may seem rediculous, but it played on the idea of the whole world being a place that you could be seen and heard, and even made famous. It also should likely include a slight description of your product. For example, you probably wouldn't name your company anything along the lines of "Under Armour" because it makes it sound tough and essential. You're probably looking for a name that says "style" in that unimaginable way. Words like "Flareshell" come to mind. It adds a hint of fire and spice, as well, as an idea of layers, something that is very much a classic fasion that doesn't fade away. I hope this helps you! |

One tip my husband always says - if you want to be found on the internet and come up at the top of lists, name your company or dba with letter starting from the beginning of the alphabet. Our company starts with an "A" and when people do a search for our type of business it pops at the top of most lists. |
