Customer bought made to measure dresses, now wants refund. Do I give it?
Our policy is that if someone orders made to measure gowns, there is no refund because they cannot be sold to anyone else, being as the measurments are to the individual. Anyway this bride to be has given me so much hassle and now, harrassment, I offered a refund but stated she would have to wait a while before I sent the money through. She has decided she does not want the dresses and I refused to remake the third one as the measurements for this girl had changed - she had hotten bigger in her waist. We have been pefectly nice to these girls, and I know they want the dresses right for the wedding, but we are a small bridal studio working from home, we cannot aford refunds on m2m dresses. What do you think I should do, as she is just being nasty, the value of her order was nearly £280, and she returned two dresses we made for her unopened. And I still saw her on the day my wife was in hospital because this girl refused to change her plans for the day. So I think she is not very nice.

I do feel like returning the two dresses made back to her. I know some bridal shops have a bad rep - they want you to have the dress they wanna sell, not your idea of a dream dress (not all the time but this does happen). I wanna help her, but don't wanna be ripped off at the same time. I did offer a refund because I said it was too much hassle to deal with her. I know you are hearing just one side but this is the case. Thanks so much for the good answers so far!

Hi,
as a experienced dress maker, i can fully see your point of view.
You followed the order with the measurements you was given, so why should you loose out.
It is not your fault that the girl has put on weight, can she not go on a diet and loose the weight before the wedding.
I would suggest that in future that you wife has a contract drawn up, and is signed by the customer.
Does you wife get a deposit from the cusatomer?
As she could do a nonrefundable deposit due to the dresses being made to measure, that way she could still sell the dresses on later, but still has some money from the deposit.
But if it was me, there would be no way i would refund her.

emeraldisle2222
No.
I would not give her a refund in these circumstances.
She wouldn't know how to appreciate it anyway.
Pity the poor sap that she is getting married to.
He needs a refund.
Or exchange.
Or cancellation.

if you ahve a policy in place then dont give the refund. She knew this before she asked it to be ordered. If she went to a solicitor she wouldnt have a leg to stand on.

Stand your ground. Refuse to speak to this lady any more. You have a right not to be treated this way and I would spell that out to her. I would also advise her that if she continues to harrass you then you will contact the police.

grodno
Stand your ground you don't have to refund anything, they were made to her specification.Speak to your Solicitor. She hasn't got a leg to stand on. I was in the retail trade for fifty years, and have met this type of customer on various occasions.

If your policy is clearly stated on the order form that she signed, then no you don't have to give her a refund. That is your evidence should she decide to pursue this. There is a limit and the law recognizes that. Good luck to you.

dreams
If you have a policy set and she knew about it, then i would say no dont give her back her money.
it sounds like she has none nothing but mess you around.
if you have a policy then i beleive the law is on your side.

You contradicted your refund policy when you offered her a refund. If your policy was not printed on a handbill and given to her as receipt, then you might as well just give her the refund and take this as a lesson learned. Bridezillas suck.

josephrob2003
made to measure normally means no return other than a fault in the dress, I dont think she is entitled to a refund, but maybe some compromise might get her off your back,
tough one

tasha200
My advice would be to give this lady a refund, make sure for all future customers that you give it to them in writing that m2m dresses are not returnable.. this lady seems out to cause you trouble and i think perhaps it will be a small lesson learned in that there are unreasonable people out there and you have to cover yourself against this.. give the refund, say bye bye hope i ever meet you again, and you wont ever be in this position again.. im not sure what judge judy would say if it were in her court room but id say by giving the horrible lady her money back you could avoid a potentially long drawn out situation... good luck...

You'll never satisfy this one, by the sound of things. I doubt giving her a refund will stop her making nasty remarks about your business so I'd just stick to your guns (although the fact you've already offered a refund hasn't helped your case, I fear.....if she's already accepted that offer I think you'll have to honour it).

If your policy states that m2m dresses are non returnable, then tell her to sod off. If she wants to try it in court you will win + costs no problem. If your policy doesnt state this, or if there is any problem with the dresses other than her fluctuating size then things get a bit cloudy. Be sure before you make a fight of this that you are squeaky clean or it could come back and bite you!.

Sympathy though. She sounds like a real pain in the a**.!

#1 on the way :D
Do whatever your refund policy says. If it says that there is no refund on made to measure gowns, then tough. Especially if it's just that she changed her mind. If you'd made them wrong, then fine, give a refund, but if she is just being a bridezilla then screw her.

Tell her she may as well take the dresses, as she isn't getting the money back.

bitoy
Ordinarily i would advise a refund, as positive word of mouth advertising from a satisfied customer is always worth more than the refunds we give.
in this case, however, i don't believe you can ever satisfy this customer whatever you do. there are really customers like that. so i would stand by the official policy. give only what is due her, no special considerations

I would say that if you have it posted somewhere in your shop that you do not give refunds, or if you have provided it in writing to her before you made the dresses that you should not have to be harrassed by her this way. If it is posted you do not have to give a refund. Just because she decided she does not want the dresses doesn't mean that you have to be out the money. Do Not Give Her a Refund. And if she threatens a law suit, get an attorney and fight her.

Barbie V
if it is your policy not to refund and its written down then you do not have to refund - if it was me I would say to her "I will try to sell these items and if I do then I will refund you otherwise NO

rams
You need not refund. Next time she troubles you tell her it is not done. She is troubling you as she finds you soft and you are a novice in this business. Be polite but firm. Say no gracefully. Dont argue with her. Just ignore her if she yells. You continue with your work and pretend you have not heard any thing. If she leaves the dresses with you it is her loss. I pity the guy she is marrying. She cant do that with marriage.

i have just had someone who ordered 4 b/m gowns, she liked them until they were tried on and then she threw a fir as she didnt like the colour! the colour was ordered from the shop swatch. we have been threatened with court etc and she is now saying she is off work ill due to me.. she has no rights when its made to measure/order so dont give a refund and ban her from your premises... get a solicitor too but dont give a refund, its like admitting you did it wrong!
