music.to.my.ears | Do I HAVE to have a degree to go into business? |
I've got GCSE's, A Levels, and did one year of a degree (none of which were related to business) However I am looking to start a business/franchise but I really don't want to go back to uni, not yet at least. Are there any other ways of getting into it? Additional Details Okay, I am doing some voluntary work atm in franchises, so I can understand how they work etc.
I'm not too sure what area just yet, but I know I want to own my own business.
Everyone I know is telling me need a degree so I can get a good job, so I can get enough capital, so that when I'm 30 I can start a business. Hardly motivating, when I hear of people at 23 starting business when they're deep in debt. |

Absolutely not. You do not need a degree in business to be successful. There is an excellent book that you should read (put down "Rich Dad" and go get it). It's called "Jump the Curve". It talks about how the pace of technology and knowledge will (sooner rather than later) make most College degrees obsolete. Why? Because the knowledge learned in one year will be obsolete by the next. Sure, there are basic business principals that you should and would learn in b-school, but there are endless sources of that information too....books, internet, mentors, etc.
You need to decide what business you are interested in starting. Once you've done that, begin a three-prong approach: First, stop by your local SBA and/or SCORE office. Find out what you need to do to get your chosen business started. Second, research online on how to implement those steps; Third, take a job in that field so you can glean what your (future) competitors are doing. Of course, you can skip this third step if you feel confident that you have all of the information you'll need but I would recommend not skipping it.
As far as start-up capital, that's a toughie. Obviously you could tap friends, family and relatives. There are also several online sites that match entrepreneurs with investors. Here is one example: www.40billion.com. There are several like that so look around.
I could spend days writing content on this issue, but I won't. Feel free to message me if you have specific questions. Good luck! |

I have run my own business, successfully for the past 16 years, and no I dont have a degree. All you need is some initial operating costs and to have something to sell that people want. Hey presto, you have a business |

Some franchises train you while others require you have a business background. You would need to obtain the information from the franchiser to see if you need any previous business experience or education before going into business with them.
For opening your own business, you would need to have an idea as to how to run and operate your business. Hope it works out for you. |

Nothing like that.. You need to have talking power to any one when you go with proposal of business.. People who have degree is also waste without knowledge..
Business is wt any one can do by they skills |

I'm 19 and started my own business 1 month ago. Facebooks founder is only in his early 20s and there are countless examples of 14 and 15 year old kids whose Jam or Cakes are making them a small fortune (for a youngster anyway).
Read Rich Dad Poor Dad, Think & Grow Rich and E-Myth Mastery. They helped me a lot and showed me that the 'traditional' method of 'waiting' for experience was never for me (unless you want to open an ultra-specialised business i.e. precision component manufacturer. But, even then you could subcontract the work to someone qualified).
Best of Luck. Start young, aim high and never give up!! |

No. Many successful business people do not have degrees, for example Alan Sugar and Richard Branson. However, many large companies will usually require a degree or equivalent qualification for you to join their management programmes. If you don't have one you may have to start your own business, or work your way up from the "shop floor". |

Experience, experience, experience - is often more useful than qualifications. A degree is not necessary in business, unlike medicine, teaching etc.. Do some voluntary work in your preferred sector. Star at the bottom and work your way up! |
