Do I have to have a business checking account or can I just use my personal checking account?
to expand on this I mean can I have a business name yet do all my banking just under my personal name? Especially when tax time comes around?

My personal preference would be to have a business account. I think either would probably work, but the accounting is easier if they are separate. It might even be better at tax time if they are separate. Also your business dealings seem more professional if you are using checks with your business name, for example. I am answering from a Canadian perspective, and because I operated a small business for many years. If you are in the US it might be different.

best to get a bus account to keep is separate.

banjobob
you could, but its not a good way to do business. It is much better to have a seperate business account.

You don't have to have them separate but it is a very good idea to, especially at tax time! It is a good idea to get a tax id for you business so you can claim more tax deductions.

the best thing to do is have separate checking and savings accounts for each - even if you are the owner and only employee. this way 'business' and 'personal' expenses don't get confused

your checking should have i.e

name... john doe
d.b.a (doing business as) business name

if your are purchasing items for business in order to claim expense you would have to show a business payed for it.. and you would still be able to withdraw from account as personal.. that is **if you are a sole proprietor.. and you have a GET license that states your name and d.b.a business name..

missgp_1946
It is best to keep seperate.
We wouldn't want to fraud the goverment.

There is no tax rule that says you need to have a separate checking account when you do business. But it is a recommended course of action even for sole proprietors:

1. Separating your business from personal checking accounts make it easy for the owner to see the financial situation of each aspect. It will be easier to see if your business is doing well or not, whereas if all your funds are combined in your personal checking you do not really know how much of that money comes from your business and how much from your personal life.

2. When you are using a "Doing Business As" (e.g. your business name is ABC Assistant instead of your name), then having your own business checking will allow you to issue checks with your business name. You will appear more professional to your vendors, suppliers and business partners.

Hope this helps

You don't have to. But if you have a business account, there is a stigma that exists for businesses accepting a check from an account with the default banking nomenclature "Name, DBA business name". So if you want to use just one account, put both names on it, such as "Business Name, Personal Name". Now, that stigma exists here in our small town, it may not exist in whatever city you're in. But yes, you can use your personal account to do business. It's just easier for you to track your business financial transactions if you keep the accounts seperate.

I think that if u have a business then you should have a business checking account. It will help you in getting a better indepth of the expenditures and profit you have.
