hi. i am thinking about starting a business myself. i currently work for a private hire firm driving a minibus. I am receiving some money soon which should enable me to start up alone and cover my running costs and household expenditure. I suppose you will need quite a bit of knowledge about the area of business you are going into. You will also have to think about where your customer/clients are coming from. The way i will start is by sub contracting to the private hire firm i currently work for whilst advertising elsewhere to build up my own customers. As i am already in the line of work i plan to start as my own business i will know how much to charge to enable me to be competitive. This doesnt always mean to undercut everyone but obviously supply and demand will need to be taken into consideration. You will have to think about how you are going to spread the word about your company because it doesnt matter how good your company is, if nobody knows about it you wont succeed. I wish you well if you do decide to start your own business. If you try you may very well succeed but there is a chance you may fail, If you dont give it a try you will never succeed though. Write a plan for starters, this will create a clearer picture in your mind of what you intend to do and allow you to examine your resources, expectations and so on... In this day and age; a website is a must and a professional looking one doesnt have to be expensive. You can place your business in ceratin specific directories where your customers are looking. Since I cannot write a link, I will write their name and just google them. Post your business on BT trade space, Freeindex, join Uk small business forums, gumtree, blos and other similar communication media. Try leafltets, attractive and creative ones though, business cards etc. Thats' a good start, try that and see. Next start thinking abou the type of set-up for your business; for instance sole trader, limited company etc. Check out business link and barclays website. They will send you free info. For specific businesses, the advice is as varied as the business opportunities, so general advice is really meaningless. But an excellent book was written about why most small businesses fail. It's available at most bookstores and costs just a few dollars. It's called "The E-Myth Revisited" by Michael Gerber.
The "E" doesn't stand for Electronic, like in Email or Estamps, Esurance, etc. It stands for Entrepreneur. And running a business is more than just doing a job that you happen to own. Still, if you have ideas, you should do everything you can to see if you can make them work. |

decide what business you want to start. after that the first and most important thing you must do is market research. it is no good starting a business if no-one wants your product or service. once you have established that you have a market then you need to draw up a business plan to showing costs ,projected sales etc,this should show you if it is worthwhile even starting. if you require outside finance to start you must have a business plan to show potential investors. good luck |
