You know this is what Walmart is doing everywhere. It has already taken the smaller shops out of business in places like America with their SUPER WAL-MARTS and it will continue to do so everywhere. Because no one has to stop anywhere else for groceries, clothes, household items they just go to walmart which shuts down every other shop! This will start to happen more in Canada as we see Wal Marts starting to stay open later, and offer more convenience so yes I will have to say that it will start to close down the mom n pop shops in India slowly which is very sad!!!

Yes, Wal-Mart will impact their way of life and hurt small business....just as it does everywhere they go! However, it will take Wal-Mart awhile to infiltrate their country, so one wont see the effects for 5-10 years. |

Yes it would definitely have an effect on the mom and pop stores because you can find 'everything' at walmart and people will find that easier to shop for groceries etc.. than what they are used to now and lets not forget about the 'low prices' they keep advertising which am sure will attract people. Such changes are inevitable and only when people welcome change it gives a chance to go further in any area and i am hoping the mom and pop stores will still have business going for them locally where ever they are. Change is 'okay', thats the way the world works. |

No, it can not.All those who expect big retailers like Walmart to come in and devour mom n pop shops should pause and think.
What does mom n pop stores provide:
1) It is just a stone’s throw away. So anytime the family needs something, it is easy to just stroll over and get it, even if it is as paltry as a loaf of bread.
2) There is the trust about all the items being fresh and reasonably priced at the friendly neighbourhood kiranawalla.
3) There is free home delivery, usually on a bicycle, for the regular monthly supplies, colloquially called “ration”.
4) There is credit. Since the shopkeeper knows the families in the vicinity well enough, he can actually extend credit based only on the jottings made in a tiny pocket-sized plastic-covered notebook.
A vast majority of middle class India still shops from one of the millions of tiny stores for precisely these reasons. And there is no way Walmart or even the local big retailers like Foodworld, Big Bazaar or Reliance can lure away a chunk of the middle class big enough to make the mom n pop store go out of business for at least another few decades. |

If you have a Walmart store coming, I would say GREAT they are lovely stores. But no, Mom and Pop stores wont suffer, especially in smaller towns after all, Walmart wont be everywhere so the smaller shops will survive |
