Im probably having an off day but i get sick of the question 'WHY?'. Im an IT manager for a Law Firm and everybody has a question even if i have explained numerous times i get asked the same questions over and over and over again! For instance i have told everyone that some SPAM will get through the filter but i still get asked 'why have i got SPAM!' All seems a lot worse since the appointment of a new practice director.

I suppose i mean other staff question my skill and judgement - after all i am the IT Manager and i am v good at what i do and to me its not rocket science! |

I think life is particularly difficult for IT support managers because you will always be surrounded by people who do not know anything about what you do. So if you are a lawyer, you work among other lawyers and you understand at least the basic mechanics of each other's work. You are an IT guy working among lawyers...if you leave you will be an IT guy working among academics, or artists, or marketing people...whatever. |

I work for the Department of Defense and know my fair share fo IT employees and I hear all the complaining and thrust me you are not the only one repeating yourself every five minutes to someone!
Everyone gets sick of repeating themselves daily, just smile, grit your teeth and keep up the good work! |

Could you collect the most FAQ/Issues and Basic Vocabulary and develop a user manual to hand out? Some people are so computer illiterate and awestruck that computers and internet, et al, even exist. A jargon reference would show them just how much you know and they don't. |

Have you realised that's the reason you're the Manager ! They trust you and know that you really do know your stuff. Take it as a compliment. However I do get your point they are going to have to learn to be more independent and work through the solutions for themselves. Be paitient I'm sure you are but you're always going get someone repeating a question no matter where you happen to be. |

While I personally hate it, I have realized that sometimes bureaucracy is a fine solution against such headaches. If you get asked similar questions all the time, you may want to prepare a formal report with all necessary explanations and send it (again and again, whenever asked) to whoever it may concern. You may want to be careful not to give any verbal explanations besides "I'll send you a complete report about the issue".
There is one possible case where you may be unable to use this method: when the interested person is your boss. In such a case it may be of help if you think it this way: "he's the one paying for my time, so if he wants to spend it with explanations, then so be it!!" |
