Do you guys and girls think that a web site would help a small business grow for the better?

Curious George
Absolutely! I own and operate two small businesses with web sites for both.

The web sites are hands down our most cost efficient point of contact for new clients.

What I have found is that you don't need flashy web "junk" on your site. It is important for the site to reflect first your business and what you offer. Second, relevant content, relevant content, relevant content. Leave the flashy crap on My Space. Third, incoming links from other sites that are relevant to your business.

Keep in mind that when you first open your site it will take anywhere from 3 to 6 months for the major search engines to pick it up and give it ranking for Search Returns. Once that happens, changes and updates to your site can take 30 days to be reflected in the search engines.

Talk with friends, family, and business associates to see who they recommend for web site services, then go from there.

It would completely depend on the type of business. We provide a local service, and the web just has callers from a long ways away calling us and wasting our time.

Keep in mind the magnatude that the web can reach, if you are willing to mail out products, or deal with distant customers, I think it is a great idea. Otherwise, make sure you put specifics about your line of business and attach it to local web pages ( they can add to you theirs for a fee).

Small business is tough! Good Luck.

Definitely, everyone these days is on the computer looking for things. Get a company to make you up a great website and see your business soar. Take care Heather

Definitely. Most people are internet savvy, at least the ones who have money to burn are, and having an internet presence makes you more legitimate. I know that the internet is the first place I go to find out more info on any business, and if they don't have some sort of site, I think they must be in the dark ages.

It will definitely help to have a site but it is important that you know what you want to achieve before you start making a site. Find out as much as you can about websites and how to market them so that your website really attracts traffic (other wise it is just expensive). Make sure it appeals to your clients and is easy to use so that they purchase on-line. For this you also have to make sure the site is secure, otherwise people will not buy from you.
Something that could help your site is by applying for a truste.com seal or related seal to make the site look professional. If you have trouble getting traffic to the site or have trouble making the site look 'good' then you should hire a professional to design the site. A good designer will also be able to tell you how to attract traffic, and a really kind designer will even help you attract traffic!!

GOOD LUCK!!

A website always helps and people always ask if you have one. The best answer is yes.

Today you absolutely NEED a website because your customers and prospects expect you to have one. That said, as a small business, don't expect many visitors or much business from it initially. Definitely do NOT blow your entire advertising budget on a website design.

Make a choice:
have a small informational site that lets the public know you exist and how to get in touch with you; or,
spend the time, money and effort on building a larger site that sells.

In any event, great, giant, sales websites only convert 2-4% of their traffic into sales. Most are much lower than that (some higher).

Finally, know that there is a pattern to web sales conversion that most designers don't follow. People don't buy from you because your site is "cool", they buy from you because you show them how your product or service will help them and you make it easy for them to buy it.

Check out, at the very least, "Waiting For Your Cat To Bark" from the Eisenbergs (below). It is more geared towards selling products online vs. selling services; but, it will help you understand what your goals and expectations should be.

Yes and No. I used to work for a large advertising company who connected small businesses websites to our large one. What I learned working there: a webite is only as good as the people who look at it! You can be a billboard on the internet highway, or a post it note. I find the best thing to do is create a website and then connect it to a bigger one. this may save money by not having to pay for "pay per clicks" and paying for key word searches. for example if you sell flowers, get you website connected to the knot.com. if you sell cars or boats, connect your website to boattrader.com or autotrader.com...you will not only get to sell your products, but be connected to a site who already pays for tons of advertising.
when you do finally get a website promote it as much as possible! GOOD LUCK!

Of course! It's such an inexpensive way (if you find the right hosting company) to get yourself out there, if you compare to newspaper or magazine ads. Of course if you are providing a products (as opposed to a service), you earn your money back. For instance, I sell handmade natural soaps. I only need to sell 10 bars a month to cover my webhosting. Of course if you provide a service, this logic doesn't apply, but you still can't go wrong - the web is very inexpensive advertising.

Good luck!
