Do you know of any websites that give you a step by step guide on how to set up your own business?
I particularly interested in the financial side of things i.e tax and VAT. I've looked at HM Customs which was helpful but was wondering if there are any others.

Have a look at Business Link: http://www.businesslink.gov.uk/bdotg/action/home?domain=www.businesslink.gov.uk&target=http://www.businesslink.gov.uk/&tc=000AD140010001
Find your local office by typing in your Post Code. Any problems you encounter, give them a call or search for the info. or answer on their website.
Another handy source of advice is the Citizens Advice Bureau (CAB): http://www.citizensadvice.org.uk/winnn6/index
Searching on the web for: Setting up a small business UK, will reveal many sites offering advice and information.
Don't forget to browse the business section at your local library!
See if there are night-school or Open University courses available.

There is a website called www.mioomi.com which offers business support, but I'm not sure if they have launched to the public yet - just seems to be a BETA site...

Try contacting a good low cost accountant, as I have found the businesslink to be lacking in helpfulness - I can recommend Quart 'A' Accounting Services - they are based in Cheshire, but work across the country, their prices are amazing.

Try their website www.quartaaccountancy.co.uk

Good luck

Normally, when you're getting started you just worry about making money. Keep your receipts, payments and receivables and an accountant does all the other stuff for you.
