It depends on the situation. If you are leaving and completely severing ties with the company due to a completely unworkable situation then it is not necessary.
If you expect the company to be a positive reference or even an individual at the company to give you a positive reference then yes it is absolutely necessary to give 2 weeks notice. |

Yes. I once impressed an employer by accepting his job. He asked me to start work the next day, I said no, he got upset.
Then I asked him if he'd want to hire someone who didn't have the decency to give his current employer 2 weeks notice.
It's a big plus. It helps you to not burn bridges. You may work with those people someday in the future.

They were never necessary but its a courtesy to your employer so they can make plans to replace you. If you have co-workers you care about you would want to do that. |

Logistically no, not really. However, as a matter of consideration and etiquette they most certainly are. Most industries are really small communities when you get down to it. There is a good chance that you may wind up working with or for your former employers at some point. You don't want to burn any bridges.
Even if you want to drop your trousers and take a big dump in your boss' desk drawer in lieu of a resignation letter, it is usually best to say, "thank you for the employment opportunity, but I have accepted another position elsewhere and my effective end date is two weeks from now". |
