SCUZE-ME | Do you think I should quit my job (read below)? |
I work for a small company that was given to my boss upon his father's death.
There's me, 3 technicians, and the boss = 5 employees. I am the lowest paid employee.
I manage the office...literally EVERYTHING comes across my desk; I answer phones, make appointments, run payroll, pay bills, do all banking, deal with salespeople, handle billing and collections, and take after hour and weekend calls (few).
My boss gives us all company cell phones + gives the tech's vehicles to drive and pays for their gas and he pays for our medical insurance plus he gives me a cash bonus from time to time.
The problem is that the boss is the weakest link in the company. He underbids jobs and gives free services, doesn't turn his paperwork in, etc.. Plus he NEVER looks at the accounting, just signs checks (and bitches about it) but spends company money on his own personal stuff. ie: $1800 customer appriciation party.
The rest of us are so tired of watching this company go down the drain. |

I think the four employees including yourself should have an intervention. It would probably be best if your boss added to your salary and hired an assistant for you. That way you would have help and your assistant would be able to help the boss keep track of whats going on and how to make the job better. Good luck |

well... you could be looking for a better job while you have a job now thats what I would do.. one thing that is nice is that you have a lot of experience that you are gaining. and if you apple places you can find a way to tell people why you are looking for anotger job tackfully. such as you can say that the company is not the same since the father has passed and you no longer see alot of growth in the company and so on. |

The question you need to ask yourself is "do you still like your job?"
Just because you don't agree with the way the boss is running the company it's no excuse to quit your job unless you absolutely hate it.
Also, you may find out once you've moved on to another job that you end up at a really bad company with a really bad boss. The grass is always greener... |

I wouldn't quit without first having employment elsewhere. That would hurt you more than it would hurt anyone else (trust me, they would have you replaced very quickly)
If you find yourself unable to cope with the way your boss is running his business, than you should look for something that suits you better. Particularly if you find yourself about to say something regretably stupid to the man who pays you fairly well to work, not to judge how he is running his company. |

First off, $1800 on a customer appreciation party is not personal stuff. Sounds like he's trying to build more business by underbidding and giving free services.
Being the lowest paid employee doesn't mean much since we don't know what the techs make and it's like comparing apples to oranges. What is your wage compared to others who do what you do? If it's still lower, ask for a raise.
It sounds like you are concerned about the company's future more than anything. So sit down with him and have a budget meeting. Have all the numbers together BEFORE he offers a bid. Work it out.
In the meantime, update your resume and keep it on hand. You'll probably need it, but if you are happy with the work you do and the people you work with, I'd stay until the end. |

If his company is going down the drain, perhaps you could offer to purchase the company from him? If you don't have enough to make a full payment, offer to give him a percentage of the revenues until the amount is reached. Better to have a company succeed and cut someone out than watch the inept boss wash it out. |

quit, but only after you have secured another job. but keep in mind some jobs are better than others they all have pros and cons, but i nor my wife have ever had a job that we didnt have any complaints and you wont know them until you quit this one and go on to the next. thats just the way it is. they dont tell you in the interview, "Oh yeah we drink wine all day and in th office and put the work off on you." |

Yup. I think you should get your resume ready and look for another job. You have a lot of responsibility and should be compensated for it. It always bothers me when any supervisor misuses company funds. Then I always have a hard time respecting any of their decisions. You may need to compromise some of the benefits you listed but it may be worth it. |

It's really up to you. If you are very frustrated with your day to day work environment, then the best thing for your health would be to find another job. However, it sounds like you are treated well where you are, and you may not be able to find something that is comparable. Have you tried talking to your boss about instituting procedures for paperwork and accounting? Maybe you could take a class or come up with some procedures that he would be agreeable to. |

After reading your story, I just wanted to offer this to you. I'm a pure romance consultant, i do in home parties where i educate and empower women about their sexuality. I think it's the best thing i've ever decided to do. as for money I can usually make anywhere from $125-$400 a show. I feel like i'm getting paid to party with women. If you'd like more info. just let me know. I can help you with any questions or help you sign up. Who knows.. this might be just what you're looking for ...Good luck!
