Do you think being an entrepreneur at 17 is a good idea?
It has always been my dream to become an entrepreuner but not sure how about doing it, or whether its a good idea at all!

I quit college about 6 month's as i feel the academic route isnt for me. I started working full time to bring some money in so i could afford the usuall teenage stuff, driving lessons etc.

My real dream however is to become an entrpreuner and i have had a lot of idea's brainstormed but scared about whether going for it, or whether its just me being stupid and immature like most of my family think.

I am a very motivated person and would be 100% devoted to my projects.

So what do you think? shall i go for it, or just take an apprenticship and find a career move in a big company like most people for example?

Oh and before you ask me what im intrested in, I know whay my second option is, its an apprenticship in hospitality, but doesnt come anywhere near my love to become an entrpreuner.

( I know ive spelt entrepreuner wrong :S )

I would very much appreciate it if you could reply.

Thanks a lot!,

Ash,

I think it is great that you want to start your own business.

I do think it is a mistake to not complete college.

According to the BBB, 80% of all business fail within 2 years. I rand a number of businesses while in college.

You can do both.

Good Luck!

Do it! follow your dreams and just never give up. It will be hard at times, but that is when you must continue to go on.

I for one do not want to live life with regrets. If your going to dream, dream big. I think Donald trump said that

GOOD LUCK!

If you are going to do it, it is better starting younger.

In, say, ten years time you could have a family, mortgage, loans etc and you could not be afford to do without a regular income if you are in that position.

Also, if it goes wrong you are likely to have few assets at 17 and hence a bank could not repossess your house, car etc. You could always get a job in a few years time if it does not work out how you are hoping.

You will also get valuable experience.

However, if you do seek business advice before you start the business, you local council or local citizens advice bureau would be able to tell you who to get good free business advice from. Think everything out very carefully and try to get any grant money that you can.

One final thing, it is always easier 'working' in something that you are passionate about and care about - it does not even seem like work.

Good luck what ever you do.

No, I don't think it's a good idea at 17.

If you've decided that formal education isn't the way forwards for you then fine - not everyone is academic.

But you do need to learn about business before you can possibly hope to make a success of anything yourself. So whether you want to take on an apprenticeship, or get an entry-level position in a corporation and then work your way up, or whatever - you need to get out there and learn about how the business world works before you can just launch off by yourself.

Also, one of the most important things that will determine how successful you are as an entrepreneur will be your interpersonal skills. Can you network? Can you negotiate? The fact is, the vast majority of 17 year olds are too immature to do this successfully. Even if you're not immature at all, the reality is that most people with whom you would want to do business with simply wouldn't take you seriously yet.

Another thing is finance - you don't say exactly what projects it is that you hope to get involved with, but almost everything will require some initial cash injection. You'll need to get a loan from a bank. What bank manager do you think is going to lend a 17 year old money?

I'm sorry if all this sounds harsh. I don't want to discourage you from your dreams and if it's really what you want to do *in the future*, then definitely go for it. But realise that by trying to launch your own projects at 17 you are most likely setting yourself up for failure. Your best option for now is to either go to college or to get some work experience.

I think that your motivation and commitment towards being an entrepreneur can be more than the competition alone. At the same time you need to be smart about it. Starting so young can have both its good and bad points, and you need to figure out what those are soon. Don't get ahead of yourself and make any snap decisions that could come up and bite you in the long run. Do your research. Try to pinpoint exactly what it is you're going for and find out EVERYTHING that is involved. It can even be as simple as typing in a single word into Yahoo! and searching through the different websites listed. Chatrooms, as cheesy as they can sometimes be, can also be a great open doorway for tips, advice, and new connections that can help you expand whatever it is your doing down the road. I guess what I'm really trying to get at is that it's great that you know where you should be headed in life, but don't let it get the best of you. Make sure you know the answers before the questions are even asked.

If you have the time, money, motivation, then yes. Which it seems like you have all of those. Next if you are willing to risk all of that because not all entrepreneurs make it, in fact a lot will fail quite a few times until that right opportunity comes along. If you think your idea is a sure hit, you have thought of backup plans, something to lean back on if it fails, then go for it. Also I wouldn't use all of your own out of pocket money if it is expensive. Good luck and feel free to contact for more help!

Go for it, if you fail, it will only make you smarter. Just the process on starting a business is an education you wont get in school. There are plenty of free resouces available to anyone who wants to start a business. Even a few geared towards young people.

You can go to your local Chamber of Commerce for info. I would ask them about an organization that helps people start businesses. They don't provide money, but have computers, books, software, and the folks there are generally retired and have been successful. The name escapes me, but the CC should know.

You can go to your state's Secretary of state's homepage or Lt. Governor, depends on how your state is setup depends on which one you have, they do the same thing.

Check with local Community colleges and 4 year schools, they tend to have a free resouse as well.

Good Luck.

Take an apprenticeship in hospitality for maybe a year or two and while you are doing that start doing your business part time to start getting a feel of what business is all about. That's what i am doing. I work full time and run my business part time. I made sure i register my business so as avoid certain problems.

Try and come up with a general business name for your business so that when your business ideas unfold more the business can just take them on.

Hope that helps
