If you can figure out how to ship them with out the cakes going stale or falling apart in transit, then that could be an interesting method. If it was a local thing, it might work like floral websites and pizza delivery. |

I have actually worked as a cake decorator (among other things). I don't think it would work.
First, internet business is most successful when what is sold cannot be easily found locally, or without nearly the same variety. People can easily order cakes at any grocery store bakery, and get anything made. But, if you do something that nobody else can do with designing cakes. Perhaps, special wedding or very large event cakes in particular designs.
The biggest problem is shipping. I'm not sure how you can safely ship a cake. It's a cake. Also, they have limited shelf lifes when not refrigerated. What if it was delayed? The shipping costs would be just too much.
Now, if you already have a bakery...there's no reason why you shouldn't have a website that could take local orders. |

I don't know. I know I would never buy a cake via the Internet. Especially if it were for a special occasion. I would want to see the bakery, the different options and even do a tasting before buying. |

Sure! Just make sure you develop a crush & move-resistant shipping package. Cake companies do it all the time. Matter of fact, you should probably order a cake online similar to yours & see how there's is packaged. Good luck!! |

Yes, some people have make it a reality.
The challenge is how fast you can get the cake delivery to your customer considering the time that the freshness can last.

No.
People buy with their eyes first. We eat the same way...eyes. Looking at a photo of your cake isn't good enough for me. Especially if the cake is a celebration cake. I need to look at your sugar work, your icing...the overall neatness of your work, and the Internet won't show me this adequately.
Finally, I wouldn't have an opportunity to taste your cake unless I have another way of buying the cake (e.g. tasting it before I buy), so I wouldn't take a chance on it. |

It would be hard to ship the cakes and make sure they were fresh. Shipping and Handling costs would be huge to get a fresh cake to someone without ruining it or it being stale. I suppose it is possible to make the business work. You would just have to have a really great plan. I wouldn't likely do it. |

How are you going to get the cakes to them? Delivery? If you are planning on shipping them, then no, it would not be a good idea. The cost associated with shipping would be too expensive. However, if it's a local business and they will either pick up the cakes or you deliver them, then it would be fine. |

It could be a good idea if your cakes are something people would want at a price they're willing to pay. If your going to do it I might like to sell them in my webstore. It would be another market for you. Contact me at woodcockandco@gmail.com |
