Yes i do. People should not just shop at 1 store they should shop around a variety of stores including small businesses. |

Yes I do. Think of the consumers and cheap prices and the many jobs that they'll create(and kill).
But still. Those cheap prices. |

small business is crucial for communities. They're usually cornerstones to many neighborhoods. Think of the service, camarderie, special efforts that are so often associated with the small business; something large enterprises severely lack.
being a former small business owner, i feel we need to preserve them and help by supporting them.
everyone that thinks the same should check out http://www.merchantcircle.com
They're a new site dedicated to helping small business grow. They provide ways to cultivate relationships and reach out to customers online (newsletters and coupons).
They're new and free so give them a shot. I think anything that wants to help the "little guy" is worth it. |

Sometimes the art of complaining is a form of competing. For instance, I can't stand shopping with the class of people who frequent Wall-Mart and therefore I find a far better value for my money to shop any where else. The low wage earner who has low self-esteem to accept employment at Wal-Mart offends my sense of human dignity. Again, it is a far more valuable product and service I receive every where else. Capitalism is the only true source of freedom and were it not for government interference in the free market society, a business which drags the moral esteem downward and delivers sub-par products would have long since vanished. |

I think people should support small businesses so that they won't go out of business, otherwise they will be stuck with a poor selection... |

Complaining is a form of competition. If Walmart can sign exclusive anti-competitive deals because of its size, and have countless legal staffs. Small business and consumers have the right to speak against them. Walmart doesn't have the lowest price on everything. In fact, in the times I've been in Walmart pretty much everything I find I can find somewhere else for less. But people have the image that Walmart does have the best prices. If small business could disprove this theory maybe they'd have a better chance. Then again small business also likely doesn't have the best prices so that may be of little help. Still if Pepsi says its better than coke, there is no reason small business can claim it has lower prices than Walmart. |

What small businesses need to realize is that they CAN compete with WalMart. Just about every retail industry has a group that independant stores can join which allows them to combine their buying power. So instead of buying for one store, you would get the price breaking of 250 stores (or the number of group members.)
Sure WM sells everything under the sun but they don't specialize in anything. They don't carry cartridges for every printer, they don't have every color and size of balloons, they don't have specialty cheeses nor do they have every style of shoe you might need to complete an outfit. That's where small business comes in. Small businesses have the ability to special order things in for customers and are able to offer personalized customer service.
Try finding somebody at WM to special order something in for you. Or better yet, try finding somebody that speaks english! If the local party store doesn't have the color of balloons I need, they can order them in for me. If the shoe store doesn't have my size, they can call another store to find it for me. That's what competes with WalMart...service.
I am willing to make a few more stops and pay a little bit more to shop smaller businesses...it's worth it. |

They can't compete, that's the point. Wal-mart is a huge multi-billion dollar corporation that uses it's strength and exposure in the marketplace to set the prices of it's suppliers. Smaller buisnesses and retailers simply cannot compete with this backwards theory of supply. The small stores have to buy what the supplier sells the product for, but wal mart tells the supplier what they will buy it for. See the difference. Wal mart says "you will sell it to us at x price or it won't be on our shelves". This gets suppliers shaking in their boots because wal-mart is the biggest reailer in the world. Doing buisness like that is wrong and many suppliers are starting to take the hit of not being in wal mart than play ball with them. good for them, but this model of importing cheaply made goods and selling them for dirt cheap has polluted the shelves of our stores with cheap crap. I think more people should be aware of where they shop and take into consideration just what that company stands for when you walk in the front door. |

I think the small business should try to compete, however I am not sure how they can. How can they offer goods at such a cheap price. Walmart can order in such a large bulk that they can get things for cheap. I dont think the smaller business can do things the same way and offer consumers the price. Also look how many people work at Walmart at any given day... the people in the stores and on the shipping and in the offices. I mean for somneone with no experince and no education Walmart is the perfect place for them to work and make an ok living. I know one will not make a large check but hey its something and at least it is not in the food industry... we all know how people feel about a job at MC Donalds. |

i think that they are trying to compete, but walmart has so many customers, and so much stuff, the small stores can't hardly hold up their end enough to compete |

You can not compete with Walmart... you might of heard of the name Waly-World..Walmart is a monster than can not be stoped by small business. They have no chance.. So they have to resort to complaining. Sometimes this complaining has helped the small business's stay open. But I assure you Walmart will drop in a few years. |

Small businesses can't easily get massive discounts from chinese manufacturers who pay their workers pennies per hour.
Walmart's huge size allows it to get the best prices for goods made by indentured servants in foreign countries. Couple this with the fact that Americans seem shut to down their Christian values and go inside a moral vaccum the minute money is involved and you have the perfect storm. |
